Article 12 of the UN International Covenant on Economics, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) provides the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standards of mental health. This right is the central human dignity of the person. Principles for the protection of persons with mental health - the MI principles were adopted by the UN in 1991 and provide standards in relation to informed consent of treatment. Protection of confidentiality standards - the rights of people in mental health facilities and the provision of resources. This principle is the right of everyone without of exception to the best available mental health care. I ask the question tonight - with our economy alledgedly booming - why is our suicide crisis representative of such a shambles particularly in area of mental health care? read full story / add a comment

To people living in the North Inner City, the recent revelations at the Dublin City coroner’s court at the inquest into the death of young Terence Wheelock will not come as a surprise. One of the activists from the Hill of Tara vigil camp has sent a message to activists and people who are in solidarity with the desire of the campaign to Save Tara to support the vigil: A Legal challenge , today, failed to put a stop to the PPP, and the works are to begin in earnest in 72 hours. There are possibly some options to challenge the issue but a lot have been worn out , the vigil campaign is quite small and very dedicated. They have asked for support in the form of tech for evidence, and solidarity protests in the next couple of days. read full story / add a comment

The Union of Students in Ireland organised today a protest about the blood ban operated by the Department of Health on Gay men. It is now widely accepted that the best way to ensure a safe blood supply is to refuse blood from anyone engaged in high risk behaviour - rather than the current situation where hetrosexuals engaged in high risk promiscuous sexual activity will have their blood accepted while gay men involved low risk monogamous relationships will have their blood refused. read full story / add a comment

Greg Boertje-Obed, Fr. Carl Kabat OMI and Vietnam Veteran Michael Walli had no trouble finding Weapons of Mass Destruction. They looked in North Dakota rather than Iraq! Known as the "Weapons of Mass Destruction Here! Plowshares" they are presently imprisoned for their nonviolent disarmament work on an ISBM Missile Silo in North Dakota, USA. They are part of a growing body of folks imprisoned for resisting the war. Consider wrting a postacrd or letter to them! More background www.jonahhouse.org read full story / add a comment
