international / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Friday February 11, 2011 19:04 by Yassamine Mather
Given the events in Tunisia and Egypt the campaign in support of Iranian political prisoners has taken on a new urgency. So has the campaign for democracy in Iran. Iranians are just as entitled to freely choose their own leaders as Egyptians and Tunisians. Any change must come from within Iran and from below. John McDonnell MP will launch a new campaign at the Hands Off the People of Iran (GB) annual conference this coming Saturday (February 12).

The 'Free Panahi! Free all political prisoners!' initiative is expected to pick up significant international support. Renowned film director Jafar Panahi has had a savage six-year jail sentence imposed on him, plus a 20-year ban on making films and travelling abroad, for the 'crime' of planning to make a film about the mass movement for democracy that spilled onto the streets of major Iranian cities in 2009. read full story / add a comment

Defend Free Speech- Fight PSNI and Unionist intimidation
QUB Republican Congress has been prevented by Unionists and their supporters from being registered as a full society despite having fulfilled all the SU requirements. As a result the society is being prevented from holding meetings on SU or college property. Having had three successful public meetings before Christmas in private venues with three hundred in attendance the society has planned a full list of meetings/protests for the coming term. However PSNI/RUC intimidation has resulted in access to these private venues also being denied to the society. However 'The Republican Congress' is determined to push ahead and plans to hold the first two meetings as open air events in front of QUB Students Union.

Defend Free Speech and attend these meetings.

The year 2010 will forever be remembered in the Republic Ireland as the year in which our national sovereignty was ceded to the European Union / IMF and the rights of the Irish people were set aside in the interests of international capitalism and the financial, business and banking elites who have used the economic crisis to tighten their hegemonic control over the world read full story / add a comment

Legislative Analyst and Writer Arthur Stopes, III, of Berkeley, California state, has analysed the legalities of the threat to extradite Julian Assange to the United States, particularly with respect to the limits of federal law, and has reached the following conclusion: "Extradition, in view of the LIMITED jurisdiction of the over-vaunted "Espionage Act", is unwarranted in the extreme."

The latest IMF report, published last Friday, two days after the gombeens in Leinster House voted to accept the deal, reveals plans to reintroduce third level fees, abolish the current grant scheme for low income students and replace it with a loan scheme to pay for fees and confirms that child benefit will be means tested. None of these specific proposals were contained within the so called Memorandum of Understanding between the IMF and the Dublin government. éirígí has issued a press release copied below - here is a link to the IMF report - details of these latest measures are on page 24 of the report. http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/scr/2010/cr10366.pdf read full story / add a comment
