Eye-Witness Report: I decided to lodge a complaint in Pearse St. Garda station [Dublin]. This is when it got really interesting. After a 25min. wait, I finally got the attention of the sergeant-on-duty.The conversation went somthing like this:
Me: You have heard my story, I'd like you to register my complaint
Sgt: You do realize that, unlike the flower sellers in grafton street, for example, many of those engaged in this trade are unlicenced.
Me: Why then weren't they asked for their licence or their names and addresses, or even arrested?
Sgt: You should be aware that many flower-sellers use this trade as a front for pick-pocketing.
Me: Is it then the policy of this department to confiscate the property of suspected pick-pockets?
Sgt: What has this got to do with you? What's your interest in all this?

Good Friday Resistance at Shannon Airport
Two members of the radical anti-war Catholic Worker Movement were arrested inside Shannon Airport in the early hours of Good Friday. Jenny Hannon of Dublin and Martin McGowan of Sligo were detained by airport security and police after making their way into the airfield.

They had constructed a shrine to the Iraqis slain in the recent U.S. military assault, conducted the Catholic Office of the Dead and planted a bed of potatoes. Despite the large police and army presence designed to ‘protect’ the airport, over an hour later they were still airside, where they peacefully continued their libation at the edge of the runway.

In early February five other members of the Dublin Catholic Worker Movement were arrested after disarming a U.S. Navy warplane at Shannon Airport. There is now an urgent campaign to support their upcoming trial.

Greg Palast Greg Palast is coming to Ireland for the Easter Weekend to give talks in Galway and Dublin on the new and updated edition of his contemporary classic of Investigative Journalism - The Best Democracy Money Can Buy. The talks are being hosted by Indymedia Ireland and ATTAC Ireland.

Palast is best known for his series of exposes of George W. Bush's radical coup d'etat. The last time he was in Dublin in early 2002 he predicted with unnerving accuracy the Coup against Chavez in Venezuala. He also pointed the finger at the IMF as having it's fingerprints on the smoking gun that killed off the Argentinian Economy . He in writing and in person confirms every fear and suspicion held by activists who oppose the IMF / World Bank and their actions in the name of Neoliberalism throughout the World.

For more you can see him on Video messing with some US IMC heads here or check out his own website here.

Click for larger image The trip announced at the last minute left Irish anti-war activists scrambling to organise, nevertheless two days of protests occurred across the province. In Derry the famous “you are now entering free Derry” mural was covered in protest at Bush's presence. A large demo called for on Monday night was attended by protestors from across the UK and Ireland. The summit and demo were held under the shadow of bomb threats, all of which turned out to be hoaxes. A massive PSNI, Military, and secret service operation threw a security cordon of a three mile “sterile zone” around Hillsborough and Stormount Castles. Despite this, a small group of anti war demonstrators made it to within 100 ft of the castle.

On Tuesday, a large demonstration of civil disobedience took place in Belfast city centre. Heavily policed by one of the toughest forces in Western Europe, the protest blocked traffic for over an hour, before being broken up with accusations of unnecessary use of force by the PSNI.

As for the summit, the terms for the administration of post-war Iraq were discussed. Sinn Fein, who play an active role in the Irish anti-war movement, defended their decision to take part in separate talks about the future of the Irish peace process, but came under heavy criticism from other republicans for doing so. Meanwhile, strong doubts were raised about whether this US administration had any real interest in our peace process, suggesting that this was all just suitable window dressing for Blair and Bush’s “Peace Summit”.

Irish Democracy The IAWM Dail blockade last night was the occasion for the first direct confrontation between protestors and Gardai in the capital since the start of the second Gulf War. The Public Order Unit moved in in an attempt to disperse the crowd. Using non violent resistance, some protestors blockaded the front entrance to Dail Eireann in protest at our government's involvement in the war on Iraq. Ugly scenes at the demo included the hospitalisation of two protestors. The protest finished when the Public Order Unit retreated, after negotiations with IAWM leaders and left-wing TDs. Fr Iggy Donovan, a long-standing peace activist, condemned the protestors' behaviour on RTE Radio 1, while the Minister for Justice defended the police tactics. Images of Socialist TD Joe Higgins being manhandled by Gardaí were transmitted on RTE.

Meanwhile former Army Commander Edward Horgan today started his high court appeal against the government's continued policy of allowing the US military to use Irish facilities. The challenge argues that this policy is a breach of the Irish constitution, and is being followed closely by mainstream media.
