The WHO once aimed to help nations stand on their own two feet, but now it mainly pushes the agendas of the rich and powerful, says Dr David Bell. That's why it cares more about experimental vaccines than basic sanitation.

Caoimhe Butterly, who has spent the past five months in Lebanon and who experienced the results of Israel's onslaught last year, will be back in Ireland briefly at the end of January. She made international headlines at one point while in Beirut, when she engaged in a direct action protest against the presence of warmonger Tony Blair.

During her visit back to Ireland, she will speak on her experiences in Lebanon (in both Beirut and the South) and will be highlighting projects that she is currently involved with (including a film project about life in the wake of the Israeli bombardment and invasion). At present, it is confirmed that she will speak in Dublin, Cork, Belfast, Limerick, Derry, Galway and Nenagh. ... read full story / add a comment

Ireland has abandoned 90 years of neutrality by allowing over one million US troops and refueling CIA Torture Rendition planes at Shannon airport. The Irish Government is complicit in the deaths of over 660,000 people in Iraq. It's becoming more routine to see armed police on the streets of Dublin. Whether it's meant to reassure the citizenry or intimidate them is not clear.

It's hard to see how the presence of cops with assault weapons on the streets is going to have any effect on the level of crime.

Other effects are more easy to imagine. We can only assume that the Garda with the automatic rifle manning a vehicle checkpoint in Ballybough this afternoon has given some thought to the effect of high-velocity bullets whizzing around on the children and motorists nearby, in the event of him deciding to use such a deadly weapon in a built-up area.

On a bright sunny Christmas morning, the festive community of Yeppoon on the Central Queensland coast of Australia arose to greet their day in joy and gladness, opening presents and family time together. Not so for many homes across this nation and indeed across the world as the reminders of missing loved ones taken in the grip of war that has ripped a gaping wound in the hearts of hundreds and thousands of families this Advent season. I sat alone in a peace vigil where I boycotted Christmas and Boxing day to remember those families, and those serving in this war-madness or in gaols. ... read full story / add a comment
