Shannon : Trenches and barbed wire Today I had the misfortune to visit Ireland's contribution to America's war effort. What supprised me was that the airport is changing.Changing for the worse. Today Wednesday 19 March 2003 Shannon airport is being fortified.A large trench was being dug around the entire perimiter of the airport (visible from the main car road in).I assume this is to stop people driving straight through the fence. Around the corner I saw workers errecting a 5/6 foot inner fence of razor wire. This isn't the normal barbed wire but the more advanced razor wire. This wire goes from the ground upwards for 6 feet. This is a serious inner wall. I saw no evidence of the army but did spot some Us troop planes.Gardai were checking people going into the airport. If you wear a suit they won't even stop you. ... read full story / add a comment

This is LONDON 19/03/03 - War on Iraq section By Robert Fox, Defence Correspondent and David Taylor, Evening Standard British and American troops were involved in fierce fighting near Iraq's main port today as the war to topple Saddam Hussein began.
