This article is an attempt to articulate a view that our EU, and particularly Monetary Union, membership has not been beneficial - and in fact ruinous - with respect to the current economic crisis. It is hoped by this to answer some of the criticisms of the Lisbon No campaign from commentators who claim that the opposite is the case (1).

The election of Barrack Obama created a buzz all over the world. Some commentators even lost the run of themselves and tried to convince us that the one of the most important events in human history had just happened. People everywhere celebrated Obama’s victory in a way that they would not have done were it a new government in their own countries. This is barely surprising, if we take into account that decisions taken by the rulers in Washington DC carry a heavy load of consequences for millions of people across the five continents. ... read full story / add a comment

An atlantic storm came rolling in from the south west today with high winds and lashing rain - not the best weather for an outdoor protest. Undaunted several hundred people turned up at Daunt Square (!) for the third week running. Umbrellas were turned inside out and banners blown about - at one point the large Palestinian Flag at the front of the protest march down Patrick Street was ripped from one of its poles by a gust of wind. Everybody was saturated but the crowd was determined despite the weather: during the week one of the Palestinian organisers had lost his brother and his brother's entire family - 6 children and wife - all gone. The grief on his face was enough motivation for 10K protestors.
