The Dance Band with a Conscience....

A night of rhythm and dabce from Istanbul to New York

The "Other" – We’re all Flesh and Blood

At a time when the “other” has become even more distant, and strangely, something to be afraid of, Joyce made his both collective and personal journey to a land and time that was rather unknown to him. Not only he had to present himself to this “strange” time and place, he also had to take-in all that was around him. Mick opened his heart and arms to all that was musically and in every other possible way new to him. Capable of describing and changing/influen¬cing his world, Mick did his magic through his music. Not looking for the so called line that divides East and West, Mick found his soul through his search within the inseparably intermingled, complex and collective dynamics of cultures. The good old Mick from Dublin North was now known as “Mick Abi” by his people in Turkey...

For a “Western” musician it couldn’t be easy to become (really) flesh and blood with Eastern Rhythms. Yes, this was done before and yes it sounded good. But the threat of “touristic” view of the Orient was always present… So it wasn’t that Mick was looking for some catchy drumming behind his music to say“been there done that. ” Mick’s music rather lived through the drumming. It took things from it while adding to it in a fair-trade sense. Mick’s music changed as it went along staying loyal to its original idea and philosophy. It taught a lesson and consciously learned one or two from Turkey Things weren’t always easy. At times, the sound felt strange and insecure. But then Mick came-up with the answer: “Let me be in your shoes…”

It wasn’t anymore just about crossing the Bosphorus where one end says “Welcome to Europe...” and the other “Welcome to Asia...” It was about Bosphorus, the place to stand on...

I guess from here on Mick started his big Journey. Depends on where you are looking from, he may be walking towards East or West…Can there be such a thing? Listen and decide.....
