FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
The Irish Freedom Committee will honor the 94th Anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising at a commemorative breakfast event at Chicago's Abbey Pub on Sunday April 11, 2010.
(CHICAGO) 94 years ago in Dublin, on Easter Monday 1916, a small band of brave volunteers took on the might of the British army to proclaim a Sovereign and Independent Ireland. Two years later, in the only all-Ireland election in Ireland's history, the majority of the Irish people voted overwhelmingly to remove the British presence from Ireland. Today, 94 years on, Ireland still remains divided and occupied by a foreign military force.
On Sunday April 11, 2010, the Irish Freedom Committee will remember the extraordinary events of Easter 1916 and continue the call for a United, Sovereign and All-Ireland Republic free of British rule. The commemoration will take place from Noon to 2:00 PM at the Abbey Pub, 3420 West Grace St. in Chicago. Musical guest is renowned Chicago balladeer Joe Monahan, who tells the story of Ireland's struggle for freedom in song. Statements from the Irish republican movement in Ireland will be presented, and the Proclamation of Ireland - read aloud on the steps of the GPO on Easter Monday 1916 by Padraig Pearse - will be recited.
Your donation of $15 at the door includes a full traditional Irish breakfast. There will be a cash bar. A raffle with prizes including Irish republican memorabilia will be held with all proceeds going directly to the families of Irish republican political prisoners; whose numbers continue to swell under the so-called "Peace Process". There will be news updates shared directly from the POWs, who are now being locked down for up to 12 hours at a time without access to food or fresh water. There will be a cards signing for Irish POWs, and Irish republican memorabilia including books, tee shirts and badges will be on sale.
The IFC Easter Commemoration will follow a wreath laying and commemoration by the Irish Republican Socialist Committee of North America at the James Connelly monument in Union Square Park, Ashland Ave. at Washington Street, which commences at 10:00 AM. All are encouraged to also attend the IRSCNA event.
