NUJ Condemns UK Police Indymedia Server Seizure

category international | arts and media | news report author Friday November 20, 2009 16:03author by ADM Delegate Report this post to the editors

The national Union of Journalists have voted to support Indymedia.

The following motion was passed this morning at the Annual Delegate meeting of the National Union of Journalists in Southport, England.

This ADM condemns the Kent Police's seizure, without a warrant, of a UK Indymedia server in Manchester on January 22, 2009, and the ongoing failure to return it to the owner.

This ADM recognises the inherent value of open news publishing on the internet, particularly UK Indymedia and it's collectively organised sister sites all over the world.

ADM welcomes efforts by the New Media Industrial Council to work with the London Indymedia collective to create better links between the union and those working for the site, who include NUJ members.

The ADM calls for better legal safeguards for all online content and instructs the NEC (National Executive Council)to provide appropriate support to Indymedia through our members working with the site.

Canada's IMC net work very early went almost one hundred percent anti-war and anti-pollution and against the monopoly media and its lies that favour aggressive war, and maximizing profits for polluting the world. Since that time and on-going for several years now Vancouver, and Victoria B.C. has been off-line and the rest of Canada's IP stations have been restricted by somehow. Is there any IMC techies that could possibly investigate this unjust electronic suppression? Could they send info to the Canadian IMC and let them know what is happening. No info has been forth comming except that it appears as though the U.S. Military and the Israeli Massod Has been spaming and elecronically bugging the action. Is this still the policy and is global IMC able to liberate IMC Canada and put us back on-line somehow?

Is it Nato and the Norad censorship?

Is it the Harper Conservative Minority Reactionaries or The national police, RCMP?

its now november and it was taken in Janurary by the police, what efforts have you made to get it back, why did they say they took it ? have you made a complaint / solicitor etc, maybe they had reason to take it!

What are Kent police doing in Manchester?

author by Donnacha DeLong - NUJpublication date Tue Nov 24, 2009 11:20author email donnacha.delong at tiscali dot co dot ukauthor address author phone Report this post to the editors

Two points related to the above comments - jurisdiction issues don't really come into it in the UK, it's all the one police service. Kent police wanted the server, it happened to be in Manchester (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/01/23/indymedia_manch...raid/)

As for whether the police had a reason to take the server, they may have, but they don't have any legal right to keep it. It only takes a couple of days to clone a server, they're supposed to give it back when they're finished. They didn't. There's lots of info about what was done here: https://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2009/01/419838
