Spanish Civil war - lecture and wreath laying
The IBCC has organised a Spanish Civil war - lecture and wreath laying, Dec. 5th All welcome
The Internaitonal Brigades Commemoration Committee has organised a lecture and wreath laying to mark the 1st anniversary of the unveiling of the memorial in Writers' Square, Donegal St, Belfast.
One of the key reasons we wanted to organise this was to mark the passing of two great men who played a major role in the erection of the memorial - Jack Jones and Bob Doyle. Representatives of both their families will be present on the day along with other veterans families.
The lecture is by Daniel Gray, author of Homage to Cadedonia, about the Scottish involvement in the SCW. [At least 10 such men were born in Ireland, or had Irish parents - people like Jock Cunningham, Jim Maley, the 3 Gibbons brothers, Arthur Nichol, Pat Glacken, etc.]
The lecture will be held in the UNITE offices, at the bottom of the Antrim Road, 11.30 am, followed by the unveiling of a memorial there.
At 3pm we move to the Memorial in Writers' Square for short speeches by Marlene Sidaway of the International Brigade Memorial Trust and Kevin Doherty of Belfast Trades Union Council at 3.30 SHARP, following by the laying of the wreaths.
Everyone is welcome to attend these events.
The programme and a poster will be available shortly, by contact me if you want them quicker.
