Zimbabwe Human RIghts Defenders Exhibition in Letterkenny Regional Cultural Centre

category donegal | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Wednesday September 02, 2009 11:58author by Amnesty Galway - Amnesty International Report this post to the editors

Interactive exhibition featuring interviews with 20 Human Rights Activists from Zimbabwe

What: My Rights, My Struggle is an interactive exhibition with photos and audio clips from 20 human rights activists living and working in Zimbabwe.
Where: Regional Cultural Centre Letterkenny

When: From 7 pm September 11th – September 22nd

The RCC and the Letterkenny Amnesty Group are delighted to host the interactive ‘My Rights, My Struggle’ exhibition in Letterkenny. This exhibition features pictures and audio interviews with twenty human rights defenders who are active in Zimbabwe. The extraordinary bravery of these men and women is inspirational and the interviews with each one of them is an opportunity to learn first hand of the problems faced in Zimbabwe.

The human rights situation in Zimbabwe has been deteriorating continually since 2000 and, in the face of increasing opposition to its actions, the government has responded with violence and repression. Many human rights defenders and political activists are being repeatedly arrested, unlawfully detained, harassed, tortured and even killed for simply exercising their rights to peaceful protest, freedom of assembly and association or for campaigning and voting for the political party of their choice. Those featured in this exhibition compiled the materials and interviews that are featured, in defiance of the harsh repression in order that their situation might be described around the world.

This exhibition has been touring since the middle of last year and between August and December 2008 it was in South Africa, Namibia, Malawi, Tanzania, Senegal and Botswana, as part of efforts to raise awareness of the human rights abuses taking place in Zimbabwe.

We hope people will take the opportunity to see the exhibition and learn about the situation in Zimbabwe. Most importantly, we hope it will inspire people to take action in support of these activists. Details of how to become involved in Amnesty International’s campaigning on Zimbabwe will be available at the exhibition.
