Since 1939 the number of admirals in the Royal Navy has shot up more than four-fold relative to the number of sailors. What do these highly-paid senior officers do all day, asks David Craig. It's more public sector waste.

Shell protestors defiant after five arrests in Mayo
By BreakingNews.ie / TCM
Five Shell to Sea protestors were arrested today after they tried to stop pipelining work on the controversial gas refinery in Co Mayo.
The Garda Water Unit was drafted in to quell the disturbance at Glengad beach near Belmullet after 15 people surrounded dredging machinery forcing a halt to work.
A garda spokeswoman said the men were taken to the local garda station under the Public Order Act.
"It is alleged the five men were causing interference with the Shell operation," she said.
Campaign group Shell to Sea said dinghies, surfers and swimmers surrounded the machinery and stopped work at around 10am.
"Around three gardaí in a garda boat began arresting the protesters and taking the boats," a spokesman for the protesters said.
"Today's action was part of a Shell to Sea week of action against the pipeline."

Eight released after public order incident
Thursday, 21 August 2008 19:38
Eight men, who were arrested following an incident at Glengad in Co Mayo today, have been released without charge.
The men were arrested under the Public Order Act.
A file is being prepared for the DPP.
A spokesman for Shell Ireland said protestors were kayaking, surfing and swimming in the area where the Corrib gas pipe line is to be laid.
All eight were taken to Belmullet Garda station. They were freed without charge this evening.
Protesters have vowed to continue with their action until work on the pipeline stops.

Independent Newspaper

"Protesters were attacking the Shell workers who are going to make us all rich" said a Fianna Fáil source. "If there was any justice in the world they would all be in jail".
(the last one is made up of course, but probably not far off what they will print tomorrow).

The Independent did print a completely one sided view, which reads like a Shell/Garda press release:
Here's a bit of it: "Three of the protesters who were arrested are English and are affiliated to the Great Rebel Raft Regatta -- a group which is also protesting at the E.ON coal-fired power station at Kingsnorth in Kent, England, in a bid to try and prevent coal-carrying ships from reaching the facility.
The rest of the protesters who were arrested are not from the local area -- many are from Munster -- but some are known to gardai from previous protests in Glengad and Tara."
to Irish waters! And thank God they came! Perhaps the knowledge that it takes Albion to come to the rescue of the collective Irish ass might get a few of us up off it!!!! The same happened at Tara too, it was the English numbers who swelled the ranks when it counted. If they came from China, Australia, Timbuktu it wouldnt matter, are they trying to make the protest less viable by pointing that out? It dosnt make it any less viable, it just shows us up for what we as a Nation have become.
Good luck, Solidarity, keep up the fight!
A formal complaint by local fishermen against Shell has been lodged.
