Private healthcare workers deserve respect
Nursing home staff at Coral Haven Residential Nursing Home, Headford Rd, Galway, will ‘Rally for Respect’ outside the home from 7.30am to 8.15am on Thursday (July 3).
Presently, many care staff at Coral Haven are paid less than €10 per hour, and some are paid less than the nursing home’s cleaners. Despite this, staff are working normally while they wait for the Labour Court to review their terms and conditions, but are not prepared to accept being disrespected by management in the meantime.
Staff are sickened by the continual threats of dismissal being made and by the clear link between these threats and the staff’s refusal to accept sub-standard wages. Disrespect to care workers is not just wrong, in a nursing home environment it can lead to poor quality care.
Supporters travelling by car are asked to park nearby and walk a short distance to the Rally. Trade union and political banners welcome.
