Amnesty International Freedom Café 2-3 Middle Street, Galway Unchained Melodies presents Donal McConnon, from Drogheda, Co. Louth, where he is known for his guitar and harmonica playing, as well as his quirky little songs. On Thursday 31st January at 6pm he plays in Amnesty International’s Freedom Café. He is really quite fond of singers and songwriters such as, Loudon Wainwright III, Devendra Banhart, Nina Simone and Paul Simon. All of his self-penned songs contain elements of blues, jazz and folk. In 2006 he recorded a full-length eponymous album in order to raise money so that he could volunteer in Africa. He spent one year teaching in a local primary school near Blantyre in southern Malawi. It was while traveling in Zimbabwe when he saw the world-renowned Zimbabwean singer Chiwoniso Maraire perform, singing and playing the mbira (a traditional Shona instrument), that Donal immediately after went and bought an mbira for himself and has been experimenting with this strange thing ever since. Admission is free.
Unchained Melodies promotes local and international musicians, which enables us to add their voice and talent to the movement to bring human rights for all. Amnesty International is an organisation made up of ordinary people working to protect human rights worldwide.
If you are interested in playing or require details, please contact:
