A meltdown drill, intended to highlight the potential effects of a major accident at Sellafield is in progress in central Dublin. 15-20 individuals wearing chemical suits are leading the drill right now through Grafton Street, the city's main shopping street. They are informing bemused shoppers that fallout is on the way and are advising them on their possible courses of action. In the event of a real major accident at Sellafield, radioactive fallout would reach Dublin within hours. In information about the 'Emergency Plan' released to the press in Ireland yesterday by the Government, it was indicated that no evacuations would take place in Ireland. This is a ridiculous statement and in the event of a real accident would be disastrous for the population of Dundalk and also Dublin. Dundalk would be a ghost town for a very long period of time in the event of a Chernobyl type incident in Sellafield. It is situated directly across the Irish Sea from Sellafield and it is my firm belief that the people of Dundalk would Self-Evacuate in the event of an accident. It is also probable that the population of Dublin would also self-evacuate.
