Iran: “We condemn foreign intervention and internal despotism”.

category international | anti-war / imperialism | other press author Tuesday December 04, 2007 13:55author by Yassamine Mather Report this post to the editors

Yassamine Mather writes about the US threats against Iran and about the developing resistance in Iran which opposes both the US and the Theoocracy.

Over the last week, the threat of an air attack on Iran has continued to be highlighted, while the US increased pressure on European and Asian banks and companies to follow its lead in imposing further sanctions. Of course, ordinary people in Iran are already paying the price for the policies of the warmongers in the US and EU. There are reports of new shortages every day and many workers fear that sanctions imposed on two major national banks - Bank Melli and Bank Saderat - will disrupt payment of their salaries (most major firms in Iran use these two banks to pay wages).

The economic sanctions and threat of military action coming from the warmongering, US coalition pose an additional deadly threat to the people of Iran. These threats have been used by the regime to further suppress the workers’ movement and all social struggles. The theocracy claims that the imperialists lie behind all protests inside Iran, and depict the protesters as US agents and accusations of “acting against national security” can be made against every opponent of the regime, leading to the detention of hundreds of activists.

Throughout Iran protests are planned for Student Day on December 4. The organisers have made it clear they will use the occasion to express their opposition both to “foreign intervention” and “internal despotism”. Their slogans will be: “Hands Off the People of Iran”, “No to war - the university is not an army garrison” and “We condemn foreign intervention and internal despotism”.

Students in Iran are not “confused” by slogans which oppose both imperialist war and the theocratic regime, as pro-Tehran apologists allege would be the case with workers and students in Britain. Unlike the SWP, they do not think that raising the issue of the regime’s dictatorship, or exposing the government’s neoliberal economic policies, will aid the US in its plans to attack Iran. Many workers have sent messages of solidarity to these leftwing students. They are refusing to be silenced despite the fact that many militants are currently facing jail sentences for organising workers against privatisation and the regime’s capitalist policies.

Everything I posted above is true. TUs are banned. Opposition parties are banned. Woman and strikers are imprisoned for looking for their rights.

Are Amnesty, HRW, ITF all liars?

No, you are the liar.

On the 4th of Dec 2007, over 700 leftist students demonstrated in Teheran University with the slogans:

No to imperialist war, death to dictator.

The University is not an army garrison!

Hands Off the People of Iran!

No to criminal imperialist intervention!

Equality, Democracy, Boycott the elections! (reference to Islamic parliamentary elections in March 2008)

Over the last two days a total of 42 students have been arrested and the demonstrators called for the immediate release of these prisoners.

Students in 5 major universities (Tehran University , Bahomar University Shiraz, Ferdowssi University- Mashad and Mazandaran university) had used a single poster ‘Hands Off the People of Iran ‘ for their simultaneous protests.

In Tehran University, a message of solidarity by Communist students (an affiliate of HOPI ) was read out in Farsi :

To our brothers and sisters in Iran,

We wish to send our greetings of solidarity to your demonstration. Your brave struggles and protests in the face of threats, intimidation and arrests are an inspiration to us all, and underline how it is you that are our natural allies in the struggle against imperialism, sanctions and war, not the Iranian theocracy.

Unlike some on the British 'left' who deny the existence of movements like yours against imperialist war and against theocracy, we will continue to support your struggles and call for the release of incarcerated students and other political activists in Iran. We will continue to build links with your movements and look in the future to co-ordinate international actions and protests with you.

Rest assured that we will do our utmost in the fight against imperialism and provide our full support to your political demonstrations.

Yours against war and repression in Iran, and in the struggle for socialism,

Communist Students National Executive (an affiliate of the Hands Off The People Of Iran campaign)

With yesterdays release of a US Intelligence Report on Iran, confirming it had stopped it's nuclear weapons programme in 2003, the pretext for an invasion of Iran has evapourated. The US has obviously realised it is mired in Iraq and taking on Iran into the bargain would be a step too far.

So where does this leave the groups inside and outside of Iran who have been funded and driven by the US State Department, to forment propaganda to pave the way for an attack? Out on a limb and onto the next job for Uncle Sam I guess.

It was the same before the invasion of Afghanistan. Do we remember how the 'Women Of Afghanistan' were on everyones lips. We had to free them from the oppressive regime that confined them to the burka. We had to save the poor gay men who were being hung at half time during football matches. This actually happened once to two child rapists but we heard about it so often we thought it was a daily occurence. We were even told the poor Afghani people were deprived of the freedom to fly kites!!! Oh boo hoo hoo!

So many years later and the Afghan people are far worse off and women are still wearing burkas. Where are the articles? Where is the concern for the Afghani women? Where are the bleeting parrots to make an outcry of their plight? Making another outcry about Iran until yesterday but where to tomorrow?
Hands Off the People of South Armagh perhaps?
