Seven Towers Christmas Reading Series
welcomes
Seven Towers and Doghouse Writers
Ross Hattaway, Quincy Lehr, Noel Ó Briain, Tommy Frank O’ Connor, Margaret O’Shea, Oran Ryan, John W Sexton, Eileen Sheehan
Seven Towers and Doghouse Books are delighted to announce an exciting evening of quality Irish writing in Ruebens of Tralee at 6pm on Saturday 8th of December.
This evening is part of Seven Towers’ on going commitment to perform quality works of literature in public places.
It is also to draw people’s attention to the quality literature by Irish publisher available on the market this Christmas, a time when small Irish publishing houses find it difficult to compete with the advertising campaigns of their international counterparts. The Christmas Reading Series draw attention to the Irish published books, which the publishers need to sell to enable them to continue publishing quality literature.
The reading is also part of Seven Towers fundraising campaign for The Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland. 77c from each book, CD and ticket sold will be donated to the Association.
Seven Towers is a creative arts agency that focuses on new artists from any genre. It is also a small publisher and an independent record label.
Doghouse is is an independent, non-profit taking, imprint, aiming to publish four to six titles a year from open submissions by Irish born or Irish based writers in the disciplines of poetry and short stories; one of these titles to be an annual themed anthology, the remainder to be solo collections by Irish born or Irish based writers both 'of note' and those reaching book form for the first time
Readers will be:
Dublin novelist, playwright and poet, Oran Ryan, whose novels The Death of Finn and Ten Short Novels by Arthur Kruger were published by Seven Towers in 2007. Oran was described by editor, publisher, writer and poet Seamus Cashman as “a new and powerful voice in Irish Literature”. Oran’s work has been compared to that of both Joyce and Beckett.
New Zealand born poet, Ross Hattaway, whose first collection The Gentle Art of Rotting, called “an exciting new collection of poetry” by the Sunday Independent, was published by Seven Towers in 2007.
Tralee born producer, director, actor, playwright and poet, Noel Ó Briain, whose first collection Scattering Day, 21 Sonnets and Other Poems was published by Seven Towers in 2007. Gerard Mannix Flynn says of the collection that “We are lucky today to have such a collection of work at our disposal”
Oklahoma born poet, Quincy R Lehr, whose collection The Perfect Joke will be published by Seven Towers in 2008.
Eileen Sheehan was born in Scartaglin, Co. Kerry. She is a poet, co-founder of The Fia Rua Writers' Group and co-ordinator of the Bricín Winter Arts Festival. Eileen Sheehan’s debut poetry collection, entitled Song of the Midnight Fox was published by Doghouse
Tommy Frank O’ Connor was born in Currow, Tralee, Co. Kerry, 1944. He is a poet, novelist, playwright, short-story writer and accountant. He is extensively published, both nationally and abroad, and highly lauded as a short-story writer. As a novelist, Tommy Sheehan has published The Poacher's Apprentice (Marino Books, 1997), and his poetry, found in anthologies and his collection Attic Warpipes (Bradshaw Books, 2004). He has had two books published by Doghouse Loose Head and Pulse.
Margaret O'Shea lives in Killarney and is a member of the Fia Rua writing group. She has been published in many journals including The Shop and Poetry Ireland. Her collection Whales off the Coast of My Bed was published by Doghouse
John W. Sexton has had fiction and poetry published in most leading Irish literary journals and was nominated for the Hennessy Literary Award. His first book, The Johnny Coffin Diaries, based on the radio series, The Ivory Tower, proved immensely popular with children across the country. He lives in Kenmare, Co Kerry. His collection of poetry, Vortex was published by Doghouse.
Admission to the evening will be €7. This charge is to cover the expenses of the readers and 77c from each ticket will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland.
