'Ammnesty for all illegals, asylum seekers in Eeron vnow' It is not the fault of Illegals that the economy is on a slippery slope - but boy are they a convenient scapegoat to keep the minds of erron off health cuts and govt attempts to paper over the cracks of their get rich quick especially if you are in property / multinational / landlord economy. No-one is illegal. Except maybe McDowell and his far-right rump party that are not subject to any form of democratic accountability. Garda hold eight in illegal immigrant crackdown Eight people have been arrested for deportation as the Garda crackdown on illegal immigrants continued across the State this morning. A Garda spokesman said 74 other people were arrested under the Aliens Act during the second phase of "Operation Hyphen". Twenty-two people were arrested in the Southern region; 18 in the Northern region; 13 in the Western region; 14 in the Eastern region and seven in the Southeast region. There are no further details on the eight arrested for deportation. About 300 gardaí are involved in the search and deportation operation under the direction of the Assistant Commissioner Joe Egan and the Garda National Immigration Bureau. Those arrested under Deportation Orders can be detained under the Immigration Act 1999 for a period of up to 8 weeks, until arrangements for their deportation can be finalised. Last week the Minister for Justice, Mr McDowell, defended "Operation Hyphen", saying around 80 per cent of economic migrants posing as refugees were diverting resources from genuine asylum applicants. © 2002 ireland.com |

Jump To Comment: 1It is hardly surprising that the Minister for Justice is from the hard Right. The majority of the Irish population is right wing. The heat generated about the Nice Referendum is bogus.Thousands of people love to queue to watch US war planes in Galway as they did to gape at the US Nuclear aircraft carrier in Dublin a couple of years ago.The debate about Irish neutrality is hookum hypocrisy. We get the politicians we deserve.2nd rate shifty American wanabees.Sad but true.
