category galway | arts and media | event notice author Monday July 09, 2007 19:29author by Over The Edge Report this post to the editors

Readings by Margaret Cullagh, Susan Millar DuMars & Kevin Higgins will open the Westside Arts Festival/Over The Edge Summer Open-Mike on Wednesday 25th July at 7pm. Susan Millar DuMars will MC the event. Anyone who has a poem or story they want to share is welcome to take part. Each reader will have a three minute slot; but there is no limit on the number of readers. If you come along and sign up for the open-mike, you will definitely get to read.

Margaret Cullagh is originally from Tipperary, but currently lives in Galway. She is the facilitator of The Dark Gate Writers Group. She is a writer and creative writing tutor and has read her work at both the Westside Arts Festival and the Project 06 Festival. She was a Featured Reader at the March 2007 Over The Edge: Open Reading.

Susan Millar DuMars was awarded an Arts Council bursary for her collection of short-stories, 'Stupid Slim-necked Audrey Hepburn Dreams' in 2005. A chapbook of her poems, 'Everyone Loves Me', was published by Lapwing in 2005. Her short-story collection, ‘American Girls, was published in April by Lapwing. Her first full collection of poems, ‘Big Pink Umbrella’, will be published next year by Salmon.

Kevin Higgins’s first collection poems is The Boy with No Face (Salmon 2005). It was short-listed for the Strong Award for Best First Collection by an Irish Poet. It has been a poetry bestseller and recently went to its second printing. Kevin is also well-known for his performance of his work and won the Poetry Grand Slam at Cúirt in 2003. He facilitates poetry workshops at Galway Arts Centre and creative writing classes at Galway Technical Institute. His second collection of poems, ‘Time Gentlemen, Please’, will be published next year by Salmon
