Why Are Some Rapes More Equal Than Others? Tue Mar 18, 2025 07:00 | Steven Tucker
When rapists are Right-wing we, rightly, hear all about their crimes. But not so much when they're Left-Wing, says Steven Tucker. Which is probably why you've never heard of the alleged crimes of this gay rights activist.

Will add in the Sligo and Amnsety link to the 'Stop Violence Against Women' Campaign
later. The refuge due to be completed in Sligo in 2007 story and the links to the
newswire article on lack of Health Department Funding for the forensic nurses
in the Rape trauma units which necessitated the closure of the North-Western
services to rape victims at weekends.
The link to COSC and the General election campaign was covered in it's publication
by the Irish Times .
Last October there was a 16 day campaign to highlight the issues of violence and
the need for infrastructure support in the form of refuges and education. It was a global
initiative , with a local focus on the problems in Sligo and the ongoing fight for
provision of an adequate shelter infrastructure in Ireland.
Paula Geraghty covered the Ringsend shelter campaign.
The 16 day camapign is available through the Amnesty portal at:-
http://web.amnesty.org/actforwomen/index-eng
Other campaigns have included 'Take Back the Tech' and the focus on the Latin American
and Guatemala Campaigns of education and awareness.
In a global context the issues have been highlighted this week by figures released
which state that hundreds of thousands of women and girls have died because of
political formations such as the one girl rule and the patririchcical cultures which
devalue women's contribution to global debate.
The amnesty link , above, highlights the frequency of sexual attack on indigenous
women and the US disregard for the issue in Alaska. It has also been a feature
of the Oaxaca repressions.
In the local context the refusal to engage with the groups such as DRCC/Amnesty
and the RCN has led to a situation where a multi-million euro response to the
issue of violence and state neglect of the individual is requested to halt due to
serious questions about its remit and role.
