Support the big one day strike![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 1.2 million workers take action across Britain As anger rises over benchmarking in Ireland, unions return centre stage in Britain with national strike day of action. Wednesday 17 July is set to see the biggest one day strike in Britain for many years. Over one million local government workers in Unison, GMB, and T&G are set to strike over low pay, and in London additionally over London weighting. ISTC members have been called out on the same day over pensions. Tube workers in London will strike from 8pm on Wednesday against tube privatisation. In South East London some NUT members have voted not to cross picket lines (thereby taking unlawful secondary action). This is also a big week for the left with the victory of the Derek Simpson challenge over Blair's favourite union stooge, Sir Ken Jackson, coming on Monday, the strikes on Wednesday, and the result of the court case against the right wing coup in PCS coming on Thursday or Friday. We urge all our members to visit the picket lines on Wednesday to offer solidarity from the Socialist Alliance (if you're not already on the picket lines on strike). We also urge you to raise motions of support for the local government workers etc. in your union branches.
