| IRISH QUEERS SHUN BLOOMBERG AT PARADE![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Citing Bloomberg’s broken promise to boycott AOH parade, activists cry foul in Woodside. Woodside, NY – Irish queer activists today protested NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s presence at the Woodside St. Patrick’s Day parade. Holding placards reading “Separate is not equal,” activists from the group Irish Queers decried Bloomberg’s presence at this “inclusive” parade as an act of hypocrisy. Bloomberg also plans to march in the Ancient Order of Hibernians’ parade on Fifth Avenue, which explicitly excludes queer participation. Irish Queers rejected Bloomberg’s appearance in Woodside as an attempt to appease civil rights groups while continuing to endorse the bigotry of the AOH on Fifth Avenue. The group called on Bloomberg to honor his campaign pledge to boycott the St. Patrick’s Day parade, until the ban on queer participation is lifted. “In civil rights struggles in both Ireland and America, politicians have tried to straddle the fence when standing up for justice was not convenient. If Bloomberg marches on Fifth Avenue, he’s a bigot, plain and simple,” said Pat Lavery, a member of Irish Queers. In the tradition of Irish republican protests against bigoted and illegitimate authority, Irish Queers will stage a black flag protest at the St. Patrick’s Day parade on March 16th. The group will gather at 59th Street and 5th Avenue, on the southeast corner, at 10:30am. |
