APPO Communiqué
Oaxaca: City of Resistance
POPULAR ASSEMBLY OF THE PEOPLE OF OAXACA
TO THE PEOPLE OF OAXACA, MEXICO AND THE WORLD
TO THE NEWSMEDIA
The Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca, after the aggression that our people have suffered in these last hours in the framework of our struggle for a profound transformation political, economic, social and cultural realities and to overcome the ageold situation of misery and hunger that our people hve been subjected to by the oppressors.
Following the framework that we planned for yesterday's day of struggle (November 25th), the APPO had agreed upon a MegaMarch that left from the Casa Oficial in Santa María Coyotepec, with the objective of arriving in the zócalo and surrounding the PFP that are occupying the zócalo of this city, and that by definition this human shield would be peaceful and without any contact with the PFP, and given the events that unfolded yesterday, the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca makes the following considerations:
1.That Ulises Ruiz Ortiz days ago declared that he was beginning to put into effect a plan which would regain control of the city before December 1st.
2.That days ago, in coordination with various police forces, paid assassins, paramilitaries and thugs of Ulises Ruiz Ortiz began to station themselves on the roofs of several buildings in the historic center, something that we recieved a number of complaints about from neighbors as it was without the permission of the property owners, and all of this with the idea that from these positions they would provoke aggression against this movement.
3.That yesterday, after the comission of the Popular Council of the People of Oaxaca passed through most of the intersections in order to establish the human chain around the PFP, the police, paid assassins and paramilitaries stationed on the roofs of these buildings began to throw marbles, pepper and tear gases at our compañeros at various points in order to provoke more the more generalized aggressions that unravelled at that moment, in the form of a broad offensive of aggression by the PFP at various intersections, the massive numbers of detentions of the compañeros who retreated in various parts of the city, the ensuing actions of the thugs and paramilitaries that participated in conjunction with the PFP and other police forces, and that many of them shot firearms at APPO militants.
4.That in the face of this general offensive from the agressors, members of the APPO and the people more generally made use of their legitimate right to defend themselves to avoid a massacre of our people, making use of stones, sticks, fireworks, and other objects they found in their paths since the majority did not come prepared for a confrontation.
5.That the preliminary figures that we currently have is that there are 165 political prisoners, tens of disappeared, hundreds hurt and wounded, and many killed as well, though at the moment we cannot confirm.
Before this situation, the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca makes the following declarations:
-We actively condemn this repressive attack that our people have suffered, and that things continue as they were in the worst conditions of fascism that history has seen.
-We reaffirm our struggle for a social, political, economic and cultural transformation, the struggle for popular power, nd we reaffirm that the fall of the tyrant Ulises Ruiz Ortiz is the beginning for the reestablishment of peace and tranquility for Oaxacans, along with the immediate withdrawal of the PFP as since they arrived, violence and ingovernability have only increased in the State of Oaxaca.
-We ratify that the people's struggle in Oaxaca and that of the APPO is one of the masses in which the people of Oaxaca participate, and that it is civil and peaceful in nature, and so we declare that the burning of various buildings in the city was not the intention nor the decision of the APPO
-We denounce that a short while ago, various compañeros have been moved from the military jail in Miahuatlan de Porfirio Dias, Oaxaca, among them the compañeros Cesar Mateos Benitez y Jorge Sosa Campos, with an unknown destination, and without motive, in violation of their most fundamental human rights.
-The presence of the PFP and the events that transpired are further proof of ingovernability in Oaxaca and that tranquility for the people of Oaxaca has not yet returned.
-We declare that the struggle of the people of Oaxaca for the fall of URO will continue, and in like form our plan of action will continue to be implemented.
For all of that previously stated, we make a call to the people of Mexico and the entire world to continue solidarity actions with the people of Oaxaca and detain the bloody repression that continues to be carried out against out people, to national and international press, to human rights organizations, to form brigades to help this city bring out the facts of the violations of the most fundamental rights of its people.

I saw this little radish carving on a mainstream media outlet . They are just starting to report
the rising in Oaxaca. The town is always referred to as WHS Oaxaca (World Heritage Site)
or a 'pretty post-colonial town'.
The APPO have lost people.
Indymedia has lost Brad Will.
The women are saying that there are reports of Rape against female demonstrators.
Ulises Ruiz has not been impeached.
Indymedia (nyc) has photos of resistance to the walls- Mexico and Palestine.
Calderon has not reacted to the issue of the wall (which is 700 miles long and
patrolled by Marines and law enforcement from the US and Mexico).

(the carving is a little magic tradition to do with the radish people- however- am
not sure if it is tourist kitsch or real tradition . but it's cute)
