Wreath laid at SHell HQ

About 25 people took part in the Shell to Sea commemoration for the 11th anniversary of the murder of Ken Saro-Wiwa and nine Ogoni activists by the Nigerian government at the behest of Shell. A wreath was laid at the entrance to Corrib House, the headquarters of Shell in Ireland.

In a remarkable development, the Gardaí present did not baton charge participants, but chose to allow the protest to pass off peacefully.

Stephen Mills of the American environmental organisation the Sierra Club laid a wreath in memory of the dead after briefly addressing the crowd.

Shell to Sea activists were joined by members of Sinn Féin, including Deputy Aengus Ó Snodaigh, Éirigí, the People's Movement and a number of anti-war activists including Ciaran O'Reilly of the Ploughshares Five.

Corporate media from PA and the Irish Times were present.
