In the “war on terror”, Islamophobia has become the new racism. Muslims in the west are branded as terrorists and targeted by states as the enemy within. The film director Oliver Stone claimed that the world faces a twin extremism, the neo-cons and Islamic fundamentalists. Many on the left see islamicism as being as dangerous as Bush.
What attitude do socialists have to religion? Is Islam particularly conservative and “unenlightened”? Why does resistance to US imperialism often go under the banner of Islam? Why does the left sometimes side with those attacking muslims?
This socialist day school aims to address some of these issues. The Scottish Marxist, Neil Davidson, who has written recent articles on Islam and the West, will be introducing a session on Marxism and religion as it relates to Islam today. Does that explain why the SWP never get involved in fighting "old" racism - deportations and old-fashioned things like that?

Islam is a religion not a race. Muslims are white, brown, yellow, black. Opposing Islamist oppression of women, gays and workers cannot be racist. Are Iranian and Iraqi socialists who oppose and criticise Islam, racists?
Religion is the opium of the people...but the swp supports any anti-US imperialist group unconditionally not matter how reactionary and authoritarian, wtf
One problem with Islamophobia is that it's being used by racists to attack Muslims, who are mostly non-white. It's a thinly-veiled form of racism. (Why do you think Nick Griffin of the BNP attacks Islam?)
On the other hand, I abhor the intolerant views of certain forms of Islam, which is why I don't support the SWP, who are too eager to embrace any organisation that they regard as anti-imperialist.
