They marched against hospital closures and cuts in the South yet they have closed hospitals and made cuts in health spending in the North - hypocrites!

When SF in the person of Barbra DeBruin were in charge of the Northern Ireland health service from 2000 to 2002 the hospital waiting-list rose from 48,000 to 58,000 for a population of 1.65 million. Both then and now the hospital waiting-list in the Republic is about 25,000 for a population of 4.2 million. Please read the article by ex-Taoiseach and eminent statistician, Dr. Garret Fitzgerald, in last Saturday's Irish Times. He points out that in the past six years mortality rates have been falling faster in the Republic of Ireland than in any other EU country, by about 5 per cent annually, and are now among the lowest in the EU. No fall of similar magnitude is taking place in N. Ireland either now or when Barbra DeBruin was Minister of Health there. There is not a scap of evidence that introducing in the Republic a public-only health service, such as exists in N. Ireland, would save one life. Quite the contrary, our mortality rates would probably increase to the levels currently prevailing in N. Ireland.
