"For many centuries, we ni Ireland have had an unbroken tradition of each generation having an armed uprising against Britain. In my generation we had an armed uprising in 1916 with the proclamation of freedom of the Republic of Ireland... Here we are rising again, and if we go down, we'll rise again!"

In his foreword to the book, Florence and Josephine O'Donoghues War of Independence, professor Joe Lee says of the role of women: 'This factor deserves far more attention in the evaluation of the extraordinary ability of the IRA to resist vastly superior British power. It might even be argued that the overwhelming British superiority in manpower was partly countered by Irish superiority in womanpower.'
The editor of the book, John Borgonovo, says " Women formed a crucial part of the republcan war effort, fearlessly propping up the IRA while acting as intelligence agents, flying column scouts, HQ clerks, nurses, and safe-house keepers".
The book is a memoir of Florence and Josephine O'Donoghue of their part in the struggle in Cork in 1920/21. It refutes the foolish propaganda of Peter Hart. The British were prepared to kill and torture. But Irishmen and Irishwomen were ready to fight and die. They defeated the greatest military machine in the world and killed the British empire.

I have just published a poetry book of 679 pages. The book is dedicated to Mairead Farrell. I wish to publish another at Easter .All the writings in this new one I hope to be about Mairead and the female aspect of hunger strikes and republicanism. I had no real iea until recently how hugely couageous and brilliant these women are. I would appreciate any information you could give me as I wish to write many poems about this unbelievable patriot.
