Lebanon is one of the few states (& nations) which has seen its entry to the Eurovision song contest affected by geo-political concerns. The small emergent democracy withdrew its 2005 Eurovision entry on the grounds that if Israel (with one the best track records of winning that competition) won, Lebanese singer song writers, soft music groups, lighting technicians, back-up diplomatic staff, go-go dancers, pretty people hanger-ons would have to attend the next Eurovision song contest in Israel.
That was their way of making a peace time point.
Of course they're not in peace now.
It has very little to do with veils, islamism, judaism, pockets of terrorists, how many Irish people were worth flying out 3 days ago and how many were reported as still being there today.
It has nothing to do with Iran or Syria or the USA.
If Lebanon is an independent nation-state with a democratic and secular constitution - then it is for the Lebanese to solve their terrorist threat within their borders - & it is the right of the Lebanese people to protect their borders "inviolate".
The flag of Lebanon - an emergent democracy, independent sovriegn state & nation. One of the international community. Technically secular & inviolate since the Irish UN left.
Miss Lebanon 2006 photographed in Australia. She still hasn't gone to the feminist gender political lengths of her predecesor.
Miss Lebanon 2005 posed naked pouting to communicate a society, state & nation identity of modernity.
a reminder that Lebanon is inviolate, independent. its democracy may not be imposed be foreign intervention.
Irish media coverage of the events in Leb, Israel and Palestine has been mixed but overall not that bad I think.
The Indo has stuck Robert Fisk on the front page a couple of times this week which is good.
Minister D Ahern's role in this whole thing is praised here in Irish Examiner

Juan Cole Writes: ''This is the first sentence of a news item today: "George W. Bush on Tuesday warned Syria to stay out of Lebanon as he signalled to Israel that it would have more time to carry out its military campaign . . ." I swear to God, it really says that. Then comes this gem: "He said Israel had been asked to ensure that the government of Fouad Siniora survived, but the White House declined to comment on repeated Israeli strikes against Lebanese army units."
What you have to admire most about W. is how he stands by his friends.''
