temple bar was part of italy tonight as italy won the world cup 5-3 on penalties after extra time finished. both teams had scored one goal in the first half, but could not improve on their scores after 120 minutes of normal plus extra time. after the final whistle, approximately 700-800 italian fans congregated at the junction of essex st and eustace st to celebrate the team's win. this location had seen a similar spontaneous street party during the week after italy had beat germany 2-0 in the semi final. some french fans also spilled out into the street and for some moments it looked as if the two groups of fans would physically clash, but the italian fans pushed the french supporters out onto the quays where roadworks were being done and the defeated fans dispersed peacefully after ten minutes of tense confrontation. the party was set to continue long into the night as dublin's large italian community celebrated their first world cup victory since 1982.
