Young people and drugs in the community!

category kilkenny | miscellaneous | event notice author Friday June 16, 2006 16:49author by Eirigi - Ógra Shinn Féin Report this post to the editors

Ógra Shinn Féin Ceatharlach / Cill Choinnigh will be holding a public meeting in the Clubhouse Hotel, Kilkenny City, on Saturday 17 June. The purpose of the meeting, entitled, "Young People, and Drugs in the Community", will be to highlight the increasing drug problem in our communities, North and South, but especially in the context of Carlow and Kilkenny.
Ógra Shinn Féin
Ógra Shinn Féin

Ógra Shinn Féin Ceatharlach / Cill Choinnigh, have taken the initiative to hold this meeting, as the sole voice, for young republicans in the area. We believe it is important that this issue is highlighted by elected representatives, in the local area, and at national level, on behalf of young people in the two counties.

Good initiative. Fair play - one small point: "as the sole voice, for young republicans in the area" no one should presume to be the sole voice of anyone. People can speak for themsevles, and young republicans can speak for themselves, don't patronise us!

Wrong. You are not the sole voice for Republicans in any area.

I am a young republican-socialist( unaffiliated to ANY party or group) and I have a voice. It is my own. Ógra Sinn Féin do a lot of good, yes, but you are not the only platform for young republicans to voice their opinion! Unaffiliated, free thinking and marching under no banner but my own.

You represent the views young republicans from my area, like many other areas in Ireland. Good work Ógra!

The only true voice for Republican Youth in any area is Ná Fianna Éireann. The Voice of Truth, Honour and not selling out to the two illegel assemblies on this island. Yes, Drugs and their spread needs to be stopped, but Provo Youth does not represent Republican Youth.

Stp stimatising young people. Young people, indeed anyone, has the right to take drugs. People can and often do exercise control ove their use of drugs. It would be better if these drugs were legalised: cannabis, ectascy and cocaine. The moralising and pathologising of the establishment and the 'addiction' treatment community is rather sad.

Nice one on organising the meeting Ogra and for attempting to address the concerns around what is a quite vicious emergent drug problem in the Carlow area especially in relation to hard drugs. Echoing one of the points made above, I do however hope that one of the issues raised at the meeting is the rampant criminalisation of young people from parts of Carlow town by judges in the district court there. Mary Martin springs to mind in particular as a detestable moralistic character who subjects kids to extremely harsh sentences for the crime of being caught with nothing more than enough blow for a joint or two.

Anyone from the area who scans the local paper, the Carlow Nationalist would be familiar enough with the pattern, one unnamed 16 year old was recently subjected to a fine of €800 for the possesion of less than €20 of hash, anyone who read the Slates breakdown of the cops use of figures when it comes to measuring drug seizures can eye that figure up with the deserved level of cynicism that gives rise to the popular saying "never sit beside a Gaurd at a party."

There's another pattern within it all of course, and thats the propensity for harsher fines to be doled out to kids from the town itself above those who are coming from rural or to be more explicit farming backgrounds. Anyone from the Irish countryside can attest to the effect a "good name" can have in remaining in advanced standing over and above any actual social standing determined by capital possesion.

With unprecedented growth over the past decade, there has been an influx of young Gaurds into the area, this doesn't eliminate the ridiculous situation that arose recently where the station had to close as there was no one to work it. But like any other urban setting, young rural Gaurds may not neccesarily be familiar with the routine habits of harmless recreational drug use among teenagers, eyeing up kids standing on street corners as trouble when in reality there is no recreational facilities in the town to use or hang out in.

A number of years ago the Carlow Regional Youth Services ran a Youth Cafe as a hang out spot in a disused shop front, pretty much ran by the kids that used it such ventures do far more to tackle drug useage than the outright victimisation perpetuated by the likes of Martin. As anyone who has ever walked down through the riot that is Tullow St after the Foundry and the Music Factory has closed can testify, alcohal abuse remains the most visible and intense anti-social use of drugs in Carlow town

. Feed that in to the "vrooom vrooom" culture of boy racing you hear around the backroads out by Leighlin Bridge and Ballinabranna every weekend night and it's obvious where the real problem lies. If youth would stand up and tell Mary Martin where to shove it when it comes to possession for personal use...

No better party to discuss drugs and young people than sinn fein. After all, aren't they getting well paid by dealers for protecting their backs. watch out for the upcoming court cases where leading sinn feiners are exposed as collaborators in the drug trade.

If they had their way they would be the sole voice in society.. frankly ogra Shinn Fein are more reminiscent of Hitler Youth than anything truly resembling republicanism.. vigilantes and bullies

Ogra Sinn Fein are a shower of gobshites. Their Party leader Gerry Adams knows they are not the sole voice of Sinn Fein, when he said at the Ard Fheis, There are alot more republicans out there that are not members of Sinn Fein.
My support for Sinn Fein and Ogra Sinn Fein has ceased. The have used the hunger stike memory for political gain. And if they hold claim to the ten hunger strikes, by god, They certainly owe Bobby Sands, Micky Devine and the rest a hell of a lot.

On to the drugs problem. Beatings were once tolerated, defending communities was ok. This is all criminal now. Who defends the people? An Garda? Now, Highlighting the problem is sufficient. What about solving it? Such who gives a bollox once were seen to be doing something and getting re-elected.

Unless, Sinn Fein are going to take radical direct action against drug dealers, i believe its pointless having a meeting. People dont need Aengus O who? to come and highlight the drugs problem. We all know the effects of drugs. Some of us had to suffer losing loved ones due to the problem. But Aengus and Ogra are gonna make it all better. If you believe this your out of your mind.

Sinn fein have lost my vote. However, this will not even slightly affected their massive political strength. But, if they dont change their outlook their votes will suffer, people will cop on soon enough.

I personally cannot understand, what a republican would be doing in Sinn Fein. Who do they look like? The IRA? The Stickies? I think they are exactly like the Labour Party. No distinction.

The sole voice of republicanism, Maybe thats Fianna Fail, they say that also. But sure coalition with Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein, yous can both share that voice.

I would like to thank anyone who has posted here and provided positive feedback and constructive critiscism. Those of you who have taken your time with a view to criminalising and undermining our struggle, and what we are trying to achieve, should realise that we have heard it all before and your overused rhetorc is embarassingly out-of-date.
There are a few issues I would like to briefly mention following the meeting. In relation to issues from other parts of the constituency we will be following up on the event and giving people a chance to air their views and share possible solutions to this terrible problem through the means of community activismin the coming weeks.
Another point which people seem to have taken issue to is the the reference to, "...the sole voice, for young republicans in the area." This was not the meaning intended. Ógra Shinn Féin recognise and of course respect the views of other young people in the area.It was not our intention to assume that we are the only vessel for youth political thought in the area, our intention was to highlight the fact that we are the only campaigning, active republican youth movement in the area, and that we are the only youth wing offering a real alternative to the status quo in our area. This position is vindicated by the fact that we are organising events like this, and the Hunger Strike Memorial weekend in Kilkenny City from July 21 -23.
