The Unmanageables mark International Womens Day for Peace and Disarmament

category dublin | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Wednesday May 24, 2006 13:54author by Madam K - The Unmanageables Report this post to the editors

International Womens Disarmament Day

The Unmanageables held a Mourning Tea at the Irish Aviation Department this morning as part of the International Womens Day for Disarmament.

Veils were worn in mourning for the lives lost to War.

The location was chosen by the Women to symbolise our disgust at the Irish Aviation Authority's facilitation of the continued illegal war in Iraq, the war in Afghanistan.

Blood on our hands symbolises our culpability in war and rendition flights.

We say Our Government is not mandated to utilise Shannon in such a manner.

Lady Unmanageable say's "Out Damn Bertie ! ".

Good girls, (and forgive the double entendre), but it was nice to see that not only the truck drivers were utilising their horns. was wondering if we had any shots of the Ecuadorian lady who joined us for breakfast?

It was lovely to hear "Fair Play to you"!.It is not my usual response to handing out flyers however it is an indication of the great response we got today. Our aim to mark International Women's Disarmament Day with Mourning Tea to highlight the direct link between the numbers of troops going through Shannon and the death toll there.
Last year 300,00 foreign troops went through Shannon and over 13,00 civilians died that year. The death toll is rising .In 2003 the daily toll was estimated at x20, in 2004 x31 and in 2005 x36 people died a day. Each death is one too many. The Unmanageables say that the Fianna Fail and Progressive Democrats have blood on their hands for allowing our air port in Shannon to be used by the American army of occupation.
Well done to the other Unmanageables who turned out today.
We even had good weather.

Yet another creative, imaginative and eye-catching protest organised by the the Unmanageables. Witty and caustic at the same time.

Well done to those who took part!

Davy,

There is a website (www.antiwarireland.org), but there's nothing on it at the moment. Went bottom up with AWI in the late summer of 2004. A few of us are trying to get things back together and a member in Cork is working on the website. A case of 'Coming soon...'
