'Support the Afghan thirst and hunger strikers
Picket McDowells constituency office,
The triangle, Ranelagh
Friday 19th May
6 o'clock
Residents Against Racism are holding a picket outside Michael McDowells constituency office in solidarity with the Afghan thirst and hunger strikers.
Vigils have also been organised - Anti War Ireland {AWI} in Dublin -
A vigil in solidarity with the Afghan hunger strikers, who are currently in St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, will be held outside the building at 6.30pm today. Organised by anti-war activists, the vigil is intended to show our support and solidarity with those inside in their resistance to their impending deportation back to war-torn Afghanistan.
and presently -
A vigil will also be held at 12.30pm today for those who can make it during the day.
LATEST UPDATE OF THE SITUATION - 1.30pm today
There are around 70-80 people presently outside the Cathedral in support of the men.
A Group of students from the school across the road have joined in and there is lively chanting outside the Cathedrals fronte.
Three men from Afghanistan living in Waterford have joined the protest, and have been refusing food/water from yesterday. Presently two are outside the Cathedral and I believe one has gained access. That makes 44 people on the Hunger/Thirst strike now
Latest news from the Hospital is that Abdul and Sultan are in a stable condition, some men inside are weakening and ambulances are on standby
Joe Higgins TD, Jerry Crolly TD and A. O Snoddaigh TD are present at the Cathedral although as of yet have not gained admission. There are also people from RAR, Revolt Video, Unmanageables, SP, SF, AWI, AY, WSM, IAWM, WV and SWP attending and plenty of unaligned!
Plenty of corporate media present although a good turnout of imc'ers
Dear friends, a more appropriate place has been suggested to hold the Solidarity vigil.
It shall be at the EU offices in Bedford Street {which hold an Irish Government office}.
So it will be at the same time - 1pm tomorrow.
Could this information be forwarded on – Many thanks – see you there Davy Carlin
how did the picket go
any reports
On a rain swept lunchtime 25 people picketed the European Commission offices in Belfast in Solidarity with those on Hunger Strike. Activists both picketed outside and also leafleted on both sides of the road- while seeing others going in to speak to those inside {Ciaran to attach pictures}.
Further to that a further 10 or so {through various activists receiving ‘eventual phone calls and e-mails} had turned up over the period at the original place of the Irish Tourist Board.
Apologies for that, as word had spread beyond the Networks and I am presently replying to such persons to put them on the Networks list.
This initiative, taken by Organise! in Belfast, was called as a matter of urgency and at quick notice – {within one day}.
This we felt needed to be done given the growing concern of events materialising in Dublin - over several prior days – and therefore solidarity needed to be forthcoming from Belfast for fellow human beings..
I thank all who attended, more especially given the most recent reports coming through
‘Quote - Two men have just been taken from the cathedral in a state of semi-consciousness; one appears to be in a critical condition.
A schoolchild has just been hospitalised from the cathedral, many of his school friends are outside, some in tears’.
-It was decided in an open forum at the picket {and in the pelting rain} that further action was needed. A consensus was reached that to coincide with RAR actions on Friday - that Belfast would follow suit.
Therefore on Friday at 4pm {if this situation continues} there shall be further protest at the front of City Hall at 4pm – A petition will also be drawn up and we shall then go back around to the European Commission offices ‘ to hand in the petition – if this issue is still on going.
Also a meeting shall taken place to set up a broad based and ‘specific Solidarity group on this issue
Political organisations and parties, those on the ARN steering group, and human rights, community and anti racism activists had attended through both points
Again apologies for those who had attended at the original point – but it was good nevertheless that we had seen ‘the word of mouth’ {through activists }- providing Solidarity.
So spread the word, through the networks, word of mouth etc about Fridays solidarity action – 4pm City Hall –
Again very short notice -but necessity means that we cannot do otherwise – Davy Carlin.
As Davy promised...
Fair play organise!.
Solidarity.
Starting to recieve e-mails etc ranging from various trade union activists to various political activists - about tomorrow's protest in Belfast.
Dear friends,
Momentum is growing around Ireland for Justice and Solidarity for those on the Strike
School students have mobilised, Vigils are being held twice daily, another two demos tomorrow, another on Saturday etc -as the Momentum grows,
Contacts have been coming in this morning ranging from trade union, political and various NGO workers, who are going to attend the Solidarity action in Belfast tomorrow.
Again it is at the Front of Belfast City Hall at 4pm, where petitions will also be signed to bring around to the Europe Commission offices.
I would urge all Anti Racism, Refugee, Human Rights, Trade Union, Solidarity, Community and Political activists etc, to attend and to spread the word and Stand in Solidarity with fellow human beings at this time of need.
Bring, placards, banners etc - but most importantly bring yourselves,
Please circulate, In Solidarity - Davy Carlin
More and more such organisations are lending support as Momentum grows – One such below in a ‘Southern Press statement -.

PRESS RELEASE
Integrating Ireland
Integrating Ireland Calls on the Government to Act
Integrating Ireland today called on the Minister for Justice, Equality
and Law Reform to listen to the concerns of the men on hunger strike at
St. Patrick's Cathedral and to act in order to prevent further threat
to these men's lives. "The serious action these men have taken is
reflective of the desperation felt in their community. They fear being
deported back to Afghanistan, a country still at war, with a very poor human
rights record and currently deemed unsafe by the Department of Foreign
Affairs which advises Irish people not to travel there" stated Aki
Stavrou, director of Integrating Ireland.
"There would seem to be a contradiction here between Foreign Affairs
and Justice, Equality and Law Reform, on their perception of safety in
Afghanistan". The hunger strikers as indeed the rest of the country have
the right to know why there is apparent double-standard.
However, the real issue at hand here is the asylum process and
complimentary protection. The latter accounts for asylum seekers who do not fit
in the definition of the 1951UN Convention on Refugees Status which
allows for other forms of protection including: leave to remain on
humanitarian grounds and temporary asylum. In Ireland only the former is
actively employed and subject to the discretionary power of the Ministry for
Justice. Any processes which institutionalizes people, restricts their
freedom of movement, denies their ability to work, places no time
constraints and with an appeal process that is lacking in transparency is
unjust. What the asylum process creates is a condition of limbo, with all
the associated negative psycho-social impacts such as helplessness,
frustration and anger, which in this instance have resulted in such
desperate actions. "Its just a very sad time for people and that people
should be aware of the absolute desperation that these people are feeling at
the moment," Grainne Landers, Tralee Refugee Support Services.
We agree with the Taoiseach that the government should 'not be giving
way to threats', however this is not a threat but an appeal by a group
of desperate people and therefore we call on his government to open
dialogue with the hunger strikers, explain why it is safe for some and
unsafe for others to go to Afghanistan and until it is safe for all give an
assurance that nobody will be forcibly returned. Furthermore, we call
for the reform of the asylum process to be fair, comprehensive and
expeditious.

David Carlin,
I would ask you sincerely to take a look at the facts of the people involved in the hunger strike in Dublin. I ask you very sincerely to take a look again and ask yourself what and who are you supporting. Some members of the hunger strike a from the former Taliban regime.and they are leading the hunger strike. Please David don't be fooled. The Taliban were a grouping who treated there own people especially women in a disgraceful manner.
I must inform you that these people who are the Taliban on hunger strike in Dublin were part of a ruthless regime regardless of 9/11 or how they protected bombers or leaders involved with it, they were extremely cruel before this trade centre attack occurred. You do not justice at all to the 11 Irish people who died terribly when the planes crashed into the towers. Please sir I ask you to be aware that you do a great disservice to women of all nations as the Taliban were executing and stoning women for little more than a trifle. If you want to strive for justice please check out the Taliban regime and most especially Sultan Chaktari who is on hunger strike in Dublin. He was part of their foreign diplomacy section of the old Taliban government before it was ousted. He is not the only one there are other members of the Taliban with him on the hunger strike also. That is why the Irish Government was denying there applications. Also perhaps you have not heard but they threatened to cut themselves with razors if they were moved why carry razors if there protest is peaceful. The Taliban regime is known world wide for its treatment of women and I as you to contact any womans grouping and they will tell you (if they are informed) or any media journalist what the Taliban were like. It would be better if these people were to finish there hunger strike and move on. You cannot seriously believe you are working for justice by supporting them. I don't know how you can look at any woman in the eye and say you support them. Work rather for oppressed women or check the blogs of the crimes the Taliban committed. I hope you will see reason.
Your post has no substance. Your tone is threatening and patronising, the politics you espouse are suspect and provocative.
Don't forget John ( full name not provided of course ) that the taliban had support from George bush jnr and senior, that fundemental muslims were used by the USA and more recently the UK to undermine democratic socialist governments.
Using your logic John, and to seek the truth that you care so much about, what about deporting US citizens whose tax dollares were spent supporting muslim extremists?
To blame all Afganis for the Taliban is naive, racist and the sort of right wing drivel whose only politics is the politics of division.
Support the Hunger Strikers.
But to blame Afghans who were members of the Taliban for crimes against humanity is just. If it was wrong for the US to prop up the Taliban it is wrong for Ireland to grant them asylum, an act which, frankly would make a complete mockery of what asylum is for.
Think about it, there are refugees fleeing these sorts of regimes who genuinely need asylum! Members of the Taliban are exactly who they are fleeing!
ALL DOWN TO THE CATHEDRAL
-Sent to the Northern Networks
Dear friends,
The situation in Dublin has heightened – they came in the early hours of this morning and put crash barriers up around the Cathedral - and now seeing a very heavy guard presence – with over 150 now there with a dozen or so vans etc – and more continuing to move in.
More worryingly though is the fact that no Independent observers are being allowed in, including Residents Against Racism. Secondly there is no Paramedic access or ambulances either his morning.
It seems a move of some sort may be under way within the next few hours, just before our Demo at Belfast City Hall.
That means it is essential for all activists to show their solidarity at this time both here and in the ‘South.
Again, the protest is at the front of Belfast City Hall at 4PM today.
Since yesterday we have booked a venue for the Belfast Support Network to meet. It shall be this Thursday at the Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre – {next to the John Hewitt bar}. This is at 7.30pm {if the situation continues} Also a discussion list is being done up as so all those who wish to show Solidarity can all collectively have an input as to what can be done and what needs to be called etc.
The Momentum created, thus far, is starting to build the pressure. In addition the local initiatives taken thus far, has also started to re - energise and re - vitalise others into actions and such Street Solidarity. Which is excellent to see.
Therefore there are many different protests being called now around Ireland as the momentum continues to grow. So see you today and please circulate and support as a matter of urgency – this as well as supporting any other calls for solidarity on this issue.
See you today – Davy Carlin
Post by John had also been sent to my e-mails a/cs etc, in which I have already sent reply.
Reports coming in -
A solicitor and a person from RAR had been allowed in...but –
It has just been reported that the lawyers and RAR representatives have been forced to leave the church, leaving the Afgans without support inside.
The guys inside are very scared.
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern on RTE saying the issue of the hunger strikers was one of health...and that it should be resolved one way or the other.....
The media have gone absolutely crazy....tens and tens of them
50 or so supporters there at the moment
SY have still got a very vocal group chanting support for the hunger strikers
Protests being organised today in various places in Ireland
Belfast Solidarity protest today at front of Belfast City Hall 4pm
This afternoon 20-- 25 activists picketed - and leafleted at the front of Belfast City Hall and at either sides of the road

Deal with this mess -- deal with it swiftly!
In the better interest of logic and particularly
considering the current state of the war in
Afghanistan, where during the past 48-Hours, the first
female Canadian soldier has been killed since WWII.
Therefore, I urge my Irish government to immediately
grant these Afghan asylum-seekers permanent residency
in Ireland.
The Archbishop of Armagh, Archbishop of Dublin and
Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral pleaded with the 41 men
to end their protest before things deteriorated. End a
hunger strike without any assurance of been able to
stay in Ireland...? That in my view is the blackmail
of bureaucrats.
Mr. Manuel Jordao, representing the UN High
Commissioner for Refugees is merely playing politics
when he suggests, "Ireland had a fair asylum system."
The UNHCR has many dirty aprons for the world to see
in their handling of refugees!
Besides, Ireland is an extremely difficult location to
get to for repeated abuses and the justification for
granting them permanent residency status is based on
the horrific news reports currently coming from
Afghanistan.
We need not become a laughing stock to the world for
our hypocrisy as we continue to grant refueling rights
to US military at Shannon. We generate refugees and
then we don't know how to adequately handle their
cases in an expedient and humane way.
Even within the context of the EU, granting the
Afghans permanent residency could be broadly seen as
striking some sensible balance to the draconian
legislation that France is currently pushing through
its houses of government.
We do not want a single asylum seeker to die to aid
our reason for getting angry and then justify getting
tough with them. Their determination is real and we
need to respect what hardships they have been put
through. This is in the better interest of
multiculturalism.
If we can afford the tools of an ex Boston female cop
to head our Garda Síochána, we can stop prolonging the
anguish for these poor people who seem so destitute.
Ms. O' Toole will not in the slightest way clean up
the corruption in the County Donegal police
contingency, let alone elsewhere in Ireland. I care
less about the logic of her coming to serve Ireland at
a price of $12,000 cheaper than she cost the Boston
Police Department (BPD).
I am determined to fight to the extent of completely
changing my summer commitments for these people.
Therefore, I shall willingly engage myself in a hunger
strike for them here in San Francisco!

Today's loose talk:
We really need to work on this. When I was home in
Ireland 2004 and 2005, I was horrified by the bigotted
attitudes of many Irish citizens towards, Arabs,
Sikhs, Indians and Pakistanis; now we see this
performance in St. Patrick's Cathedral.
In fact, I've witnessed several Indians and Pakistanis
physically attacked in O'Connel Street in broad day
light over a period of a week. I just wonder what the
traffic cameras are doing to help remedy the violent
situation?
Obviously, Bertie Ahearn needs to reshuffle is cabinet
immediately -- McDougall is an ultra conservative,
redheck, and I cannot wait to see the back of him!
We've just to look at his approach to gay
marriage...my good Jesus, where are his senses?
I'm not a violent person, not am I really advocating
violence; however, I can clearly understand someone
wanting to shoot him between the eyes! He's simply the
worst Minister for Justice (Justice Minister) we've
ever encountered in the history of Dáil Eireann!
We should all look at this:

I'm tired of hearing about the Taliban -- How many
Irish would ever suggest that all I.R.A.
supporters/members ought be deported from the United
Stated? -- Cut the damn hypocricy!
Known I.R.A. members have been granted asylum in
Canada and in the United States!
Belfast Solidarity - 3rd action in as many days.
There where a number of stalls today outside Tesco's in support of the Afghan Hunger Strikers
Therefore seeing SY, Organise!, ISN, SP, SWP, ARN members and supporters, as well as other concerned individuals -and community and trade union activists, leafleting and petitioning over a few hours.
30 -40 activists took apart in the solidarity action, which got a good response.
People are now beginning to become more aware of this situation.
Details of the Belfast Solidarity Network to be forwarded - re - meeting, -when venue is confirmed for early next week - with more actions of Belfast solidarity forthcoming
Not only is more and more people being made aware of the issue locally, it has also hit world news via the corporate press, as well - {BBC world news for example} and so is being sent around the world.
Also more contacts coming in - from various quarters of the planet as to what support and solidaity can - and will -be given.
I was informed that the refugees in St Patricks were removed with out incident this morning .
Where do they go from here ?
They leave behind war zones with no idea of their destiny.
Herded like the black sheep members of our human family.
These puppets of democracy walk the roads to jeopardy.
These victims of inhumanity we call the refugee.
Confronted at the border they reach out for theocracy,
they hoped and prayed for a peaceful place to live in liberty.
The eyes of the city had no pity for the refugee,
as they pushed them to the margin line, God help the refugee.
The borders of insanity protect our community,
in case some might escape through,
to be no more a refugee.
Great to see other groups had organised pickets to show solidarity.
Dear friends below is a press statement issued by a coalition of NGO’s involved in the South in lending Solidarity to the Afghan hunger strikers.
Firstly -
-In the North once again can I thank all those who where involved, and the solid active support lent to Organise's! call for Solidarity for the men on this issue, and thus the continual Momentum that was created - and was being created in that regard.
Similar thanks goes to the contacts we had recieved 'of the International support to be lent, and in the process of being organised by other activists.
Indeed it was a case of three actions in as many days in Belfast and would be akin to 80-120 activists in Dublin picketing and leafleting on each occasion, to lend solidarity for such an issue in Belfast – and with that we had moved then to establish a support group.
Of course we also had the odd threat or two but such was to be expected, but there was no ‘appearance of such in Belfast, again thanks to those who stood firm.
It has again shown, as we had seen recently in the re - instalment of a trade union colleague in the ‘South, that calls of unity and for solidarity will see in Belfast a solid outcome and activists visible in that support - and indeed ‘working together for a just outcome.
So in that regard it was great to see such solidarity, which was growing - locally and in part Internationally.
However the Afghan Hunger Strikers have now took the decision to leave the cathedral this further to reaching consensus with the NGOs -and they were not forcibly removed. {As some sections of the media had attempted to lead us to believe}
NOTE - 'Residents Against Racism would like to thank everyone who was involved in the solidarity actions and the Afghan men have requested that we pass on their gratitude for your support'.
Report on Saturdays support action below.
{A more detailed piece will be in my diary which will be online in a few days}
The ‘active support in Belfast for Organise! calls to lend solidarity came from, SY, ISN, SP, SWP, ARN members and supporters, as well as other concerned individuals -and community and trade union activists. – Rain Hail or Shine.
Verbal support came from many more –

Press Release -
A coalition of NGOs today commended the peaceful ending ensured by the Afghan asylum seekers of their hunger strike and protest at St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin.
"Last night asylum seekers acted courageously to avert an escalation of confrontation with the government", said Aki Stavrou, Director of Integrating Ireland, an independent alliance of 210 organisations dedicated to protecting the rights of migrants. "It is a matter of deep concern that proposals brokered by the Church of Ireland on Friday night, and put to the men were later repudiated by the Department of Justice. We understand that the emerging agreement had been achieved through negotiations with Government officials and was only withdrawn at the final stages.
"Here was a unique opportunity here to craft an honorable and dignified solution" said Rosanna Flynn, of Residents Against Racism. "Taking this approach with the men at such a delicate point was an irresponsible act, escalating the crisis. Equally reprehensible was the Government's subsequent instruction to the Church of Ireland to withdraw from all negotiations with the protestors. It suggests a confrontational intent on the part of the Department of Justice."
On Saturday, in the face of the growing desperation and deteriorating health situation of the men, a coalition of NGOs worked to generate a support package. This included guarantees of legal and social assistance to provide an opportunity to the asylum seekers to highlight their plight and clearly demonstrate their need for protection.
We emphasise that the men themselves made the decision last night to leave the cathedral further to reaching consensus with the NGOs and were not forcibly removed. We believe that Afghan asylum seekers who participated in this protest were expressing a genuine and deeply felt fear that the Irish asylum process would not guarantee their safety. Theirs was neither a threat, nor a stunt, but a plea to the government to recognize the reality of their experiences of the asylum system.

Dear friends,
GREAT NEWS!
DPP withdraws charges
19 June 2006 12:08: RTÉ news has reported that "Charges against 32 men who took part in a demonstration at St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin have been withdrawn by direction of the Director of Public Prosecutions."
And so, once again, in very real terms -
Solidarity IS strength -
I say,
sound as a pound to all those around the 'Isle of Ireland and International, who over time lent, provided and offered support {and pressure} - visible, or otherwise, on this issue.
Still more to do - and the practicalities of such - has been and continues to be done, presently, via the legal route -
Activists, of course will watch - re - the 'final and 'just outcome for our fellow human beings as to what continued solidarity may be required.
-Specifically, many thanks for those who supported the various calls for solidarity- by Organise! in Belfast {and beyond }through showing visible street and otherwise support, in this essential matter

Additionally and personally I would like to take this opportunity to note Residents Against Racisms {RAR} tireless work, both on this and many other such issues, which is as well known and respected as it is inspirational – and I am proud to say that I hold those that I personally know {and some of which that I stayed with at my last and most recent visit to Dublin} - and within it, both as friends and as genuine and committed activists.
