fast food rebellion comes to Dame Street

The Unite union in New Zealand has organised 3000 workers in the fast food industry, recently winning a fight with KFC, Starbucks and Pizza Hut. They now face a concerted attack by McDonalds to smash the union, and are appealing for international solidarity.

aren't we supposed to be boycotting starbucks?

author by D'otherpublication date Tue May 16, 2006 21:38author address author phone Report this post to the editors

But is it just going to be a shambles with a crew of people showing up as a result of the heavy postering in town and some sort of scurrying with the security at the doors? Has there been some sort of consultation with the Starbucks workers there? Just curious, not dissing the screening, I'll probably be there myself.

...Joe C is home from NZ and is fired up from his actions in NZ with the fast food workers there.

I dont see it being replicated here. Workforce very different, more transient, less homogenous, apathetic.

Not sure what the point of this action is, apart from sabre rattling/spectacle/media stunt (more than likely the last of the three).

We'll see... but if it does succeed all the better to him, its something that other groups should have been doing long ago but never did... the short lived 'stand up for your rights' thing seems to have totally fizzled out.

Seriously though, why the hell is it being screened in Starbucks.....can't it be screened somewhere else....

author by Goldfishpublication date Fri May 19, 2006 13:59author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Can't see the diference between the workers in NZ and in Dublin, unless you know something that I don't of course.

I would say they actually have a lot in common and what has been missing is an effective union campaign to organise them.

I mean who would have thought that the Irish Ferries demos were possible a year ago?

Fair play to Unite!

starbucks does seem an odd choice of venue but i think it amply illustrates joes sense of irony. probably wont get to it but hope the showing goes well.

author by Joe Blackpublication date Fri May 19, 2006 14:38author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Maybe he got Starbucks to allow the screening, in a lot of places they want to be seen as community accessable for marketing purposes.

That aside there have in fact been a number of similar initatives over the last year including the 'Stand up for Your rights' campaign which ran over last summer and also the campaign in support of the Tesco temp workers. Many of the (small number of) activists from these campaigns moved into the IWU over the last year which is one reason why they 'disappeared' - the work is still being done, just in a different form and under a different banner.
