Making the European Union Relevant for Women

category donegal | eu | event notice author Sunday May 14, 2006 12:20author by redjade Report this post to the editors

The conference will open with a keynote address by Marian Harkin, independent Member of the European Parliament for the North West of Ireland.

Making the European Union Relevant for Women (June 9, Bundoran)

A Regional Conference in the North West of Ireland

WHERE: Great Northern Hotel Bundoran
WHEN: Friday, 9th June 2006 (10Am - 4pm / Lunch Included)
TARGET GROUP: Women living in the North West of Ireland
COST: None (Travel expenses and childcare costs will be reimbursed)

Decisions taken in the EU affect people living in the North West of Ireland as much as anywhere else. This conference is to clarify what the European Union actually does with regards to issues that are of concern to women in the North West of Ireland.

The conference is being jointly organised by the National Forum On Europe and community (women's) groups in the region. The National Forum On Europe has promoted debate on the European Union since 2001. This time the National Forum On Europe wants to get women involved more fully. You are invited to attend and to articulate your views to Members of the Forum.

The conference will open with a keynote address by Marian Harkin, independent Member of the European Parliament for the North West of Ireland. Then, after an information session, the participants will break into workshops. Discussions will focus on themes already decided by local groups at a preparatory meeting in the North West:
- Rural Poverty
- Women and Work
- EU Funding at the Grassroots
- Understanding the EU's role: Education and Equality
- Health and the Environment in relation to the EU
- Human Rights

After lunch, the issues debated in the workshops will be reported back to Forum Members (politicians) and Members of the Special Observer Pillar (civil society organisations). A dialogue will follow. This will be an opportunity to raise awareness among politicians of issues relevant to women in the North West of Ireland and to feed women's concerns in the debate on the European Union.

Places are limited.
The closing date for registration is Tuesday, 30 May 2006.
