offsite link Any Electrician Knows that Lego Bricks are Genderless, Not ?Heteronormative? Tue Feb 11, 2025 20:00 | Will Jones
Any electrician knows that Lego bricks are genderless, not 'heteronormative', because each can 'mate' with any other. Perhaps Science Museum staff should study to be electricians and actually make themselves useful.

offsite link Why All Parents Should Protest Against the Children?s Wellbeing and Schools Bill Tue Feb 11, 2025 18:14 | Elizabeth Dulley
Any parent can currently withdraw their child from school if they're unhappy. Labour's Schools Bill ends that right for many, giving local authorities a veto. That's why all parents should protest against this state power grab.

The Covid Inquiry's presumption that the vaccines were safe and effective is like the Post Office Inquiry presuming that Horizon was reliable, say Ben Kingsley and Molly Kingsley. It compromises the entire enterprise.

category international | worker & community struggles and protests | event notice author Monday April 10, 2006 14:33author by Reibiliunauthor email reibiliun at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

This Mayday all self-organised workers, migrant workers, non-unionised workers, agency workers, cash in hand workers, dole claimants, free-lancers, work rejecters and all of those who fall outside of traditional union organisation to join all autonomous blocs within their nearest TUC march. To make Mayday a day where the invisible claim a common voice.

MAYDAY is International workers day, born out of the struggle for an 8 hour day in 1886. Over 100 years later our lives are still taken up by the world of work.

Even more so now, as the work imposed by Capitalism has become more casualised (temporary contracts, flex time, part time, no time!) forcing us to adapt to the point where it's hard to tell when, where or even if we are working. This leaves us in a situation where our lives are always on hold, on call and at the mercy of the market.

May 1st this year falls on a bank holiday, yet for many it will be just another day at work. Our leisure time too is filled with anxieties. The anxiety of not being able to have enough money to pay the rent, go to the cinema, a nice restaurant, shop for food, clothes, anything! In reality our work never finishes and when we're not at work we still end up making some other person even richer.

last year the muppets i was with bricked up their local councils doors to protest against the lack of housing had a great and wonderful day of colour, music, celebration and then went a bit over ambitious topping off the night by trying to squat an abandoned police station, which turned out to have a "secret underground tunnel" to a working police station just down the road filled with nasty policemen in robocop gear. Whatever you do this mayday - Don't do that. It gets right up their noses.
But have fun. For we are still in struggle. Ireland tries to downplay Mayday, moving the holiday to another date, the regime is trying to connect the mass to 1916, which is ridiculous when you consider and remember that those of 1916 were also those of 1913. The rights of the poor to :-
housing
education
pensions
healthcare
job security and no precarity
truly representative participation in their society and governance.
right to live in peace and not be sent to war
right of movement, settlement, and equality of all humanity.
were for the 1916 people as important as they ought be for us now. & of course if they had worried about "free download / uploads and intellectual copyright issues" they would have added that to their wishlist too as well as the THC thing, and the queer bits. Oh yes. they would. Dig the men and women of 1916 up out of the quicklime, put back their tortured bodies and ask them.
in their footsteps!
we want-
full+immediate adoption of EU directive on temporary workers
- european birthright of citizenship (ius soli)
- closure of detention centers for immigrants
- european basic income
- european minimum wage
- free upload, free download
- queer rights for all genders
- protection of THC consumers
