Ten people were killed on Monday evening when Dongiro cattle raiders from the Sudan attacked Turkana manyattas in Lokitang. About 100 armed Sudanese raiders attacked the Turkana in Kibis, 450 km north west of Lodwar but were repulsed. Turkana District Commissioner David Oyoo, local police chief Charles Waruale and CID boss Henry Kimati confirmed that seven Dongiro and three Turkana were killed during the raid. The OCPD said seven Turkana who fought off the raiders were walking to Kibish centre to buy food when they spotted the attackers sneaking into their village. Waruale said two of them were also seriously wounded and were evacuated from the scene to Kibis General Service Unit camp. The DC ordered the Lodwar medical boss, Dr Ndirangu Wanjiku, to send an ambulance to Kibis to pick up the injured villagers for treatment. Oyoo said security personnel, led by Lokitang OCPD James Rengera, had been deployed to patrol the border with Sudan. The attack comes barely three days after local leaders, led by Kanu branch chairman Japheth Ekidor, who were presenting views to the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission (CKRC), asked the Government to open police posts along the border with Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda to curb frequent external attacks. Speakers complained that continued external attacks had led to loss of lives and property in the district and had also increased poverty.
