Left Alliance calls on UTV chair to resign
The Belfast branches of socialist groups Socialist Democracy and Irish Socialist Network are to picket UTV headquarters at 5-300 on Monday 5th December to demand that UTV chair John McGuckian resign his directorship of Irish Ferries, currently at the centre of a storm over its attempts to sack its workforce and institute new employment conditions based on wages of €3-50 an hour.
The groups are inviting local socialist groups and trade union activists to join them in the picket in advance of Friday’s day of action in support of Irish Ferries crew who have occupied the ferries.
“It’s a disgrace that John McGuckian, a member of the super-rich set, should be involved in an attempt to bring in slave wages for Irish Ferries workers” said John McAnulty, spokesperson for the picket.
“McGuckian’s role in Irish Ferries calls into question UTV’s ability to cover the issue. If common decency doesn’t force his resignation, then the clear conflict of interest should.”

About 40 members of various trade unions in Wales turned up for the rally at Pembroke Dock.
During the protest the four crewmen on board the Isle of Inismore emerged and unveiled a banner bearing the letters SOS. The crewmen waved from the deck and were cheered by the Welsh trade union members. (snip)
