Friends of the Earth is delighted that TDs from all the political groupings in the Dáil are among the first wave to sign the Climate Pledge. The signatories during the first week of the campaign include Ruairi Quinn (Labour – Dublin South East), Trevor Sargent (Greens – Dublin North), Pádraic McCormack (Fine Gael – Galway West), Catherine Murphy (Independent – Kildare North), Fiona O’Malley (Progressive Democrats – Dun Laoghaire), Sean Fleming (Fianna Fail – Laois Offaly) and Martin Ferris (Sinn Fein – Kerry North). |

" For Ireland to have done its fair share to have prevented dangerous climate change then it would have required leadership from all parties and all governments over the last 10 years and beyond. "
The pledge suggests that by 2050 all nations ought have the same level of emissions (50% of the 1990 levels) "to eradicate" poverty.
How might this be achieved? Take for example a state such as any in central africa, where emissions are negligible now because of the lack of air traffic, motorised transport and heavy industry. Is it the policy of "friends of the earth" to promote non-sustainable economic development in these states to boost their emission levels?
Are they perhaps meant to buy second hand cars from NAFTA and the EU whilst they (NAFTA & EU) change to hybrid or other "green" fuel engines?
If not, then your pledge has been (regretfully) worded exceedingly badly. And you just got a cross-section of politicians to sign on the dotted line. i would like an answer to this criticism, as it seems to me that you could just have asked the public and its representatives to uphold the Kyoto accords.
someday we can all have one.
