Thursday August 25, 2005 22:49 by Errisvist - Shell to Sea
Shell can run, run, run but can't hide ! Today, for seven back-straining hours, Shell to Sea activists toughed it out with the inclement weather and pneumonia to bear witness to the Five, now in day 58 of their obscene incarceration, garnering rakes of petition signatures, dispensing leaflets and outrage to the good people who flocked to our info table to similiarly bear witness.

Dette brunting the attentions of the Ban Garda with tricolour activists still doing their duty at the far entrance.
Aoife
Unfortunately, I garbled the caption to Photo No 3 beyond comprehension - it should have read : Ground Demon Day for contemptible Shell; the same wall was hit by graffiti artists two weeks ago. Lady Macbeth fashion, Shell tried to expunge its guilt and the graffiti with a wire brush, but God bless 'em, the artists enlightened them - they can wire brush and run but they cannot hide.
More seriously, I never mentioned that the picket/blockade of the Statoil Station was mainly a SWP affair augmented with a sprinkling of Shell to Sea personnel - these cutting-edge activists for the past three weeks, every Thursday evening, have been picketing/blockading Statoil Stations with assistance from Shell to Sea, so, Galway SWP, apologies from unwittingly hiding ye'er light under the proverbial bushel.
The Galway SWP/Shell to Sea activists have more of the same treatment in store for Statoil next Thursday and the following Thursday, ad infinitum, until Shell and its lap dog are brought to heel.
....and this is supposed to impress us? Your protests are supposed to garner support from the grassroots in Ireland? All this does is alienates you from normal ordinary people who may have some sympathy for the 5 men but would have second thoughts reading and looking at these boastings!
Another Marmchair expert,if only people like you could get off your whinging ass and do something like those pictured above.
The courage of their convictions outweighs yours a thousand to one, they arent afraid to stand up for what they beleive is right and to show solidairty with others doing the same.
Any blockade, picket or spraypainting of corporate property is a small victory and being proud of yourself is not only perfectly justifiable but also neccesary ot keep morale boosted and to avoid disillusionment and fatigue.
Well Done Galway crew!
60 Days of Shell Infamy !
Galway Shell to Sea, our ranks much depleted by the allure of the Rossport Gathering, marked the 60th day of the Rossport Fives imprisonment by doing a six hour protest/petition/info stint outside Lynch's castle today.
Once again, a SWP activist, John Gallagher saved the day by joining Pears and myself after he had done his duty at the nearby SWP stall. Alright John, fair play !.
Members of Galway's gay community breaking their stride at the Gay Pride march through Shop Street to bear witness. Alright Gays, much appreciated !.
A shot of the redoubtable Margaretta D'Arcy taken yesterday at our stall - Margaretta, on fire with the success of her documentary on Mary Kelly at Galway's Film Fleadh is up at the Gathering showing an excerpt from her new documentary on the dire straits

61 days/9weeks !
i passed by the protest last week in galway. the picket crowd left as soon as the photo of the ban garda was taken. seemed to be the only point of the people being there was to take the photo of the ban garda. the guy with the camera didnt see her first and then ran over really quickly and took a shot. all seemed pretty harmless to me. I support the Rossport 5 not charades. I think they give a bad name to the people who are genuine in mayo and where ever else it affects.
So, "passerby," last Thursdays picket/blockade of the Bothair Mhor Statoil Service Station was only a cynical photo opportunity, how contemptible, but par for the course for ignoramuses of your ilk.
For the last four pickets/blockades of sundry Galway Statoil Stations that I've been involved in, the presence of Gardai, summoned by the proprietors has been de rigueur, small potatoes or oil, if you wish, so much so, we feel our street cred is insulted if they don't appear, they do their duty without malice and we comply with alacrity, a pas de deux, as it were, we both know the story and ritual, both of us know and adhere to the thin white line that allegedly divides us.
To opine, the "only point" of the Galway section of the Shell to Sea Campaign efforts on behalf of the beleaguered people of Erris and the Rossport Five was to take a cheap shot of the "ban garda" and then depart is nauseating and disturbing, disturbing in the sense that you whitewash your rottenness by crowing from the moral high ground by purporting to speak for the "genuine in mayo," when in reality, you crow from a stinking lying dunghill. The picket/blockade started at 6PM and finished, with or without the presence of the "ban garda" at 7PM as the terms and conditions of our protest have applied, the same time constraint as the previous seven that I've been involved in and, let it be said, bejaysus, next Thursdays as well.
Hopefully, last Thursday, at the Statoil Station, you're the same benighted spirit that spat "you're desecrating my flag" when I was holding the Tricolour rather than the camera, otherwise, I have to defensively think, Statoil Stations are the stomping grounds of the ugly and morally twisted and lost.
Yup, to gift you a red herring you cannot refuse to swallow, hook, line and sinker, I'm the guy who "ran over really quickly" to the Ban Garda, not to take a cheap shot at her, as it were, but to berate her for bringing the good name of Humphrey Bogart and the Benedictine monks of Buckfast Abbey into serious disrepute when, the previous night, in our convivial chill-out gathering in Shantalla Road, she bogarted too many spliffs of primo gear and bottles of Bucky to the cost of our collective sobriety and tolerance.
