Galway 'Rossport Five' National Demonstration : The Photo's.

category galway | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Saturday August 13, 2005 22:27author by Tommy Donnellan - Shell to Sea Report this post to the editors

2,300 to 2,400 marched from the arch !

Today, close to two-and-a-half thousand Shell to Sea protesters marched from the Spanish Arch through the streets of Galway and back again to express their outrage against the continued imprisonment of the Rossport Five and the depredations of the Shell led consortium in Erris.

In a fiery speech, the President of the Labour Party and local TD, Michael D. Higgins lambasted the cosy relationships of past and present governments' with the oil industry, visiting particular contempt on Burke's 1987 back room deal and Ahern's, 1992, selling of our family silver, as it were, for a mess of pottage when he was Minister of Finance.

Glad to hear of the impressive turnout, couldn't be their myself due to work-commitments but hope to visit the solidarity camp soon. THis march was well supported and highlights the disgust felt in Connaught and Ireland in general at the disgracefull snubbing of the Rossport 5 by Mayo Co. Co. on Friday. Mayo people won't forgive Fine Gail for giving these Brave patriots the two fingers. Which what they'll be getting when they call to my house at election time!

We need all the Information.
I have just read on Indymedia.ie what Michael D. Higgins said in Galway yesterday re. Burke and Ahern.

I think it would be helpful if someone who is involved and knowledgeable would post a full history of Shell’s involvement in the gas exploration and recovery in Ireland.

What I would like to see is a chronological list of each deal done and permission granted and the names of those involved.

Also, what were the names of the councillors who voted for and against the “build at sea” motion last week in Mayo?

Thanks.

Nelson.
