Arab ministers boycott Israeli speech![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Foreign ministers from Arab states have boycotted a speech by Israel's deputy foreign minister at a meeting between the European Union and its Mediterranean rim partners, a European diplomat has said. There was a very emotive meeting," said the diplomat on Monday, who asked not to be named. "And then all the Arab ministers stormed out of the room when the deputy foreign minister of Israel started to speak, without even knowing what he would say." Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Melchior was representing Israel at the closed-door meeting in Valencia, Spain, ahead of the arrival of Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, who was due to hold a meeting with his EU counterparts on Tuesday. Officials said the EU would impress on Peres the need for an immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops from recently occupied Palestinian areas of the West Bank, a ceasefire to end the cycle of violence and a quick start to a peace process. Peres, whose country suspects the Europeans of a pro-Palestinian bias, said on Sunday that he expected to feel isolated in Valencia.
