Sit-in in Mayo County Council

category mayo | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Wednesday August 03, 2005 14:38author by Ainm Cleite Report this post to the editors

As we speak, a sit-in is taking place in the chambers of Mayo County Council by supporters of the Rossport Five

It has been reported on Mid West Radio that a sit-in is currently taking place in Mayo County Council by the wives of the Rossport Five, other family members and supporters, members of the Shell to Sea campaign, Dr Jerry Cowley T.D., and, as far as I'm aware, 4 members of Mayo County Council from the Erris area.

More information to follow as soon as it becomes available....

do Mayo County Council meet in a pub for their council meetings?

Is the council chamber actually a pint pulling, beer swilling den of iniquity?

I cant wait to get there, looks like great fun!

Fully concur with all the comments expressed and have made my feelings known directly to RTE. They should be ashamed of themselves, acting like a prop to this rotten and morally bankrupt government.

I always think it is far far more effective to ring through to the newsdesk and express your views to the journalists and producers. It is amazingly easy to get through and it imho makes an impact on them if real life talking humans feed back angrily directly into the newsroom.

I'm sure complaints through other channels like the e-mail address for complaints are binned largelya and kept from the eyes of grunt journalists who might start questioning the editorial line coming from Ed Mulhall and co who are notorious at this stage for government supporting misrepresentation of popular protest in Ireland on a multitude of issues.

These are the people who would under no circumstances would sell Joe Higgins footage of his OWN jailing for a party political broadcast.

RTE Newsroom : Call 01 208311 and ask politely to get through to the newsdesk

Last nights 6 pm news was stunning in it's inaccurate representation of the
case for Shells on shore pipeline in Mayo

1. You asserted the gass was worth around 2 billion euro with extraction
costs of about 1 billion

IN FACT The scale of the Corrib resource is massive. Estimates of the value
of the reserves at are between 5 and 7 Trillion Cubic Feet (TCF). It is
reckoned that each T.C.F. represents a value of 3 billion euro so thats at
least 15 billion euro

2. You asserted that Kinsale gass was running out - this is not the case
and won't be for many years

3. You asserted that Shell and partners were paying 25% tax. Yes they will
in 30 years time AND they can write off all their capital costs against that
tax so when it does come in in 30 years time it will be a lot less than the
full 25%.

You neglected to mention that the state gets zero royalties and
that Bord gas will have to compete to buy the gass at full market cost.

4. The report was 100% biased towards Shell with representitives from IBEC,
the Off Shore Drillers and Andy Pyle from shell

This IS NOT what I PAY MY LICENSE FOR.

Its utterly biased and innaccurate

I was tuned in to Mid West Radio at lunch time. Liamy McNally is at the Council Offices and yes, the Erris Councillers were there. TIm Quinn, Michael McNamara, Michael Holmes and Gerry Coyle. It was also reported, in the minutes of last months meeting that it was Frank Chambers who seconded the motion although Michael McNamara said it was him. According to Liamy, a number of councillers seconded the motion to fully support the Rossport Five i.e. to support the Shell to Sea campaign.

Why then did Henry Kenny, Cathaorileach, (and of course Fine Gael brother to Fine Gael Leader "Where is " Enda Kenny) decide to take it upon himself to make it null & voil??

Many many questions to be answered.

However, the mood of the supporters is light. Prime TIme are there but the supporters are not speaking to them directly. Not after the way R.T.E. have been so far. Talk about an independent media... The journalists should be ashamed of themselves. Doing their job at the behest of a corrupt government. We think its awful when it happens elsewhere and deny that it exists here in Modern Ireland. The N.U.J. have been very quiet and they should be asked about the behaviour of their members. I have no problem with differing opinions, but a biased, unfair, ignorant and blinkered method of news reporting should not be accepted.

I digress. The supporters at the Council are looking for a commitment from Henry Kenny that a meeting be called for August and the motion put again. Henry is refusing!! What is he afraid of? That the motion will be passed - AGAIN - and that this time there will be no way Enda can get him to change it? Not twice!?

Shell, Glan amuigh nó Glan amach!!!
