news report
Thursday July 28, 2005 13:31 by Terry - Shell to Sea info at shelltosea dot com
This mornings report on goings on at the Shell-Statoil-Tideway compound in Glengad, Erris. On Tuesday Shell released a statement to the effect that they were temporarily pulling out from the landfall part of their development in Glengad and the off shore part of their development in Broadhaven Bay.
However on Wednesday from 3pm onwards one of their dredger platforms was again in the Bay, and from both its actions and the direction in which it was travelling, was judged to be expanding the trench they had dug rather than filling it in.
Accordingly this morning Shell to Sea activists, both campers and local residents, gathered outside the Glengad compound to make sure that nothing went in and nothing went out until such a time as the dredger platform was removed. This was the morning that Shell claimed they would be removing what little machinery and portacabins they have in this compound.
At 7 a.m. a Septic Tank Cleaning vehicle and a flat bed lorry arrived. The later from John Reilly Plant Hire, which is Castlebar based.
At 7.30 a.m. extra Garda arrived, soon joined by inspector Paul Glenn, whose efforts to act as an intermediary fell foul of his attempts to mislead protestors to the effect that the people the protestors had appointed to ascertain what the dredger platform was up to had no problem with what it was doing.
The Septic Tank Cleaning vehicle was allowed into the entrance of the compound the clean out the security guards portaloo and was then escorted to Ballinaboy to do the same for the portaloo of the picketers there.
The flatbed lorry is still standing there, denied entry to the compound.
Also present was Mick Coffey, of Coffey Construction, trying to pass himself of as a Health and Safety Officer.
A mobile hut hire vehicle came and left, claiming “intimidation”, but it was in fact parked 100 metres away from the picket, and most picketers were unaware of its existence.
While on the picket word was received that the Solitaire, reportedly the world’s largest pipelaying ship, owned by Allseas (http://www.allseas.com/ ) the parent company of Tideway, is due in Broadhaven Bay next week.

This land is your land
And this land is my land
From the dirty waters of the River Boyne
To the rusting cranes on the River Shannon
Was this land made for you and me
Made for you and me...

"The Erris Inshore Fishermen's Association (EIFA) was told by the company yesterday that the world's largest pipe-laying vessel, the 285m (935ft) Solitaire, would arrive in Broadhaven Bay within the next fortnight. The Solitaire can lay pipeline at a rate of 4km to 8km a day, depending on the depth and size of the pipe, and can work in 4.5m (15ft) waves.
Eddie Diver, chair of the EIFA, said he was warned by a senior Shell official on the phone that the law would be enforced if the vessel's activity was impeded in any way by the fishermen.
Mr Diver said he felt "intimidated" by this comment. The fishermen's association had told Shell earlier this month that it would no longer co-operate with it while the five men were in jail.
"I advised the company that given the tensions onshore, and if they were intent on proceeding, they would be better advised to start at the well head," Mr Diver said. "However, I was informed that they would be starting in Broadhaven Bay."
The company said the Solitaire had been "optioned" to work on the project shortly, but no decision had yet been taken about laying the pipe. Any discussion with relevant stakeholders had been in the context of potential work programmes, it said.
Mark Garavan, spokesman for the five Mayo men in prison over the pipeline, said that if the company went ahead with the work offshore, it would "definitely reject" the option of an offshore platform, and would "prejudge" the safety review that has been commissioned by the Minister. The deadline for tenders for the review closes today."
MAYO county council is in line for a substantial financial windfall if Shell processes its Corrib gas find on land.
Supporters of the Rossport Five — the local landowners who have spent the past month in jail — want Shell to move its operations offshore, but it has emerged that the council, which granted planning permission for an inland terminal, has a strong vested interest in keeping Shell on land.
The council will be paid €2m in rates for the terminal building at Bellanaboy, and for downfall pipes, some of which will run through land owned by the Rossport Five.
John Condon, the Mayo county secretary, confirmed last week that conditions laid down by An Bord Pleanala in Shell’s planning permission will result in total payments to the council of about €6.5m from the firm. Much of this will be spent on infrastructural improvements, including roads, upgrading the water supply and improving the local fire brigade. There is even a €64,000 grant to install an artwork.
“Of course, any increased revenue is always welcomed by a local authority,” said Condon. “After all, it also benefits the county.

I had Irish shoved down my throat for 13 years in school and therefore resisted and therefore dont speak irish
I have now grown to see the importance of Irish but I still dont speak it
In the interests of communication would you be able to post a translation as well as the Irish
thanks
Here is a translation of the posting in Irish above (hope it's okay by you, Éamonn?):
"It took 6 e-mails over 4 days to get these answers from the department.
Question 1: Who are the people who are in the new group which is monitoring Shell?
Answer 1: We will reply to you as soon as possible.
Question 2: Did any member of the PAD (Petroleum Affairs Division) accept a meal that was paid for by Shell, and if so, how often?
Answer 2: Yes, certain members of PAD were present at several work lunches paid for by Shell, similar to the ones with...the Environment Monitoring Group"
(just a translation, I don't know what this group is actually called)
"Question 3: Did any members of PAD travel abroad with Shell and if so, how often?
Answer 3.1: Two members of PAD participated in a trip to Aberdeen to observe the seismic details in the 3D visonarium . PAD paid for all costs.
Answer 3.2: One member of PAD took part in a field trip in Nova Scotia - PAD paid for the travel and accommodation expenses.
Answer 3.3: One member of staff travelled to the Netherlands - PAD paid for all travel and accommodation expenses.
Question 4: Did any member of PAD attend any social events organised by Shell and if so, how often?
Answer 4: PAD has no information in regard to this."
Fair play to Éamonn. I suppose the best way to get information is to ask a direct question! I'm not surprised at the answers you got, but it's important to get people to acknowledge the way that they've been courted by this multinational and to think about how their positions and their authority and credibility have been compromised. Maith thú. Caithfidh mé fhéin cúpla ceist a chur ar chúpla duine anois....
just wanted to correct part of this comment. there are only three of the rossport 5 with land in rossport, of the other two , one has a house in rossport (no land) and the other has nothing to do with rossport as he lives about six miles away.please try to get accurate information so as people reading these comments are'nt mislaid.

I think that if you don't understand a comment as gaeilge, the best approach would be to apologise and request a translation explaining that YOU don't understand.
Try not to be rascist about it - I understand that being Irish is not the same as being Gaelic. I'm sure Eamonn understands that you see yourself as being Irish. No problems with that - but please try to be mannerly about it.
D'ainneóin gur scríobh mé i nGaeilge - maidir le Ros Dubhach - chuig An Roinn Cumarsáide, Mara agus Acmhainnaí Nádúrtha fuair mé an freagra seo leanas i mBéarla.
