" ... all court actions against the jailed protesters lifted".

The Norwegian embassy in Brussels was picketed and a letter of protest handed-in over the jailing of the 5 Rossport men and the running amock, if not Amoco, of Shell and Statoil in Erris.

Re: Gas Pipeline, Ireland

The Ambassador
Embassy of Norway
17 Rue Archimede
Brussels

Dear Ambassador.

Three weeks ago five farmers from Rossport, County Mayo, Ireland were imprisoned on foot of legal proceedings brought against them by the consortium Corrib Gas which is made up of Statoil, Shell and Marathon.

We, the undersigned, Sinn Fein MEP's, respectfully request that the Norwegian Government instruct Statoil to use its influence with Shell to have all court actions against the jailed protesters lifted.

We also request that Statoil instruct the consortium to cease all work on the pipeline pending a full enquiry into all aspects of the project.

Finally, we would respectfully draw the Norwegian Government and people's attention to the fact that Statoil is part of a development that would not be acceptable in Norway itself on environmental or safety grounds and that Statoil benefits from revenue and licensing terms that would not be permitted under Norway's own regulatory system.

Yours faithfully

Mary Lou McDonald, MEP
Bairbre de Brun, MEP

Shell, ask not for whom the 5 toll - they toll for thee !.
It is said that, War, Famine, Death, Pestilince and ...er, the Rossport 5 are traditionally identified with the riders of the white, red, black, Erris, and pale horses seen in Revelation? :
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was death, and Shell closely followed with him. And power was given unto the Rossport 5 over the fourth part of the earth and the remainder thereof, to kill with the sword of truth, with hope, pillars of fire, with the righteous anger of the wretched of the earth, to trample the beast, Shell, beneath its cloven crubeens and as a consequence, all wines flowed, all hearts met and halycon days dwelt upon the earth for ever and ever and a day, until the Kingdom came.

From the cozy confines of a Brussels office block,
1000 km from Rossport,
dated 22 July 2005.

Dear Ambassador.

We are from Ireland and our government no longer cares about us. As a result, we find ourselves in a position where we have no option but to go groveling to you and your government. Basically, one of your state-run companies, Statoil, is in the process of making life hell for a large number of our fellow citizens. We, the undersigned, respectfully request that you stop being so greedy and consider halting your exploitation of our citizens and our resources. Please, pretty please, with sugar on top.

Use your head. The object of the exercise was to highlight the issue and publicise the case especially in Norway. Mission accomplished.

>>What was it Lenin said about "infantile disorder"????

That dictators suffer from infantile disorder, perhaps?

My point is that we shouldn't be running around after foreign governments in order to secure our civil liberties and our resources. The fact that you have people in Brussels sending letters to people in Norway with respect to a situation in Mayo is pathetic. Unless power is devolved back towards local people, then this situation in Mayo will be repeated again and again and again. And each time we will find ourselves asking “Why the hell is it so hard to get anything done to stop such dreadful situations?”

I have learned an important lesson lately. I no longer believe that nationalist government is in the best interest of Ireland's people. Those fools we elect to the Dail (or Brussels) don't care about us. Erris should have its own government, with each person in Erris having the power to address its assembly as well as having an equal vote to dictate what legislation should or shouldn’t govern their area. That's the lesson I wish we could all learn from this. The more power you give a person the more corrupt they become. If all people are made equally powerful, we can eliminate corruption from our society. Many of those chancers in the Dail are the descendants of people who genuinely contributed to creating a fairer Ireland. But when you give then to much power they end up destroying much of what we achieved in the last century.

What country has this as their motto? It wouldn't be the good old US of A by any chance? A country with 50 states, each with their own mentalities, some progressive, some less progressive, all lumped together to form one big happy mess. America is the most polarized country in the western world. The Divided States of America as it is now often referred to. Is this because of something dodgy in their water supply, or is it because they have a retarded political system, which tries to satisfy over 300,000,000 people? Do its "leaders" have too much power? How many states would have sent troops to Iraq if each had the sovereignty to decide?

Who in Ireland cares most about what is happing in Rossport? The people of Erris of course, followed by the people of Mayo, followed by the people of the West of Ireland, followed by the rest of Ireland. Most people in Ireland are too busy being capitalists to trouble themselves about what is happing to our country. Its only when people are directly effected that they wake up and act, and today this opression in Ireland occurs more and more in a local context. Therefore if power is held at a local level, those directly effected should will be in a position to change thier circumsances. For 800 years Irish people found themselves in the same boat with regard to foreign oppression. Consequently we united and fought that oppression, which makes sense of course. When Irish people found themselves brutalized by a Northern government, it was mostly they that fought this oppression, while most of us down south watched on. Today, oppression in Ireland involves Irish people versus Irish people; that’s the new reality.

What would localism do for Northern Ireland?

Personally, I think if Erris declared its independence tomorrow and told Bertie to go fuck himself, the people of Erris would be much better off in the long run.

As one of the European Left comrades who helped the good people of Sinn Fein raise this issue at the Norwegian Embassy in Belgium. I have seen them raise this issue before. I was happy to give my support with comrades from Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Holland and Belgium to the Rossport 5 and there struggle for justice. Libérez le 5!

Sinn fein on the band wagon again, they couldnt give a shite about north mayo, I reckon they are afraid if it goes ahead the stash of weapons they probally have hidden in the bog in north mayo will have to be moved - thats the only concern they might have - Gerry Cowley is the only genuine person working on behalf of the Rossport 5 - who by the way I support in principle - but when sinn fein start to try and run things - I start to fear for the campaign

If a political party wants to support a campaign, that's their business. Move on, man.

A letter is all very well but, is no-one pursuing this in the European Court? Am I missing something? It seems to me to be a flagrant abuse of human rights. It simply isn't legal to indefinitely keep someone in prison for contempt of court. Such a blantant disregard for the law would never be allowed in any other European country (I hope). Perhaps this is the best legal path to persue.
