Castlebar : Rossport 5 Demonstration - The Photo's.

category galway | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Monday July 04, 2005 02:15author by Dunlo Tom - Shell to Sea Report this post to the editors

3,000 to 4,000 demonstrated, not the 1,000 bruited on the airwaves by RTE.

Judging by the turnout and the anger and outrage expressed at today's demonstration against the iniquitous jailing of the Rossport 5, Shell's pipeline is kaput?.

Great pics Tom, nice to see the true figures getting out there. RTE (or at least Jim Fahy) don't seem to want to cover this snowballing saga with any conviction... what are they afraid of?

"Can't f**king wait! That'll seperate the armchair negative parasite activists from us real protesters"

What is that supposed to mean? Do you think that the tens of thousands involved in this are waiting for you to come back to show them what to do!!!!

I can understand people going to the G8 but surely when the biggest protest ever in this country is taking place against a global corporation, the place to be is here???

Does anybopdy have a copy of the article from Daily ireland? The reporter interviewed me shortly. Just would like to know what went in.
Great turn out, I don't know how much I missed by being asked to be a steward and thereby getting stuck marshalling the back of the parade.
Also apologies to a mother & child that I think may have gotten left behind because I was trying to keep up with the main body. Hope you did catch up.

Speaking after the demonstration, Mr Ring said the people of Rossport had sent out a clear message that they did not want the new pipeline to be built through their area.

“The problem now is that there are five people in jail but there are 500 more ready to go and there won’t be enough jails to hold the people that are prepared to support the men.

“If I need to go to jail, I’ll be there with the men,” said Mr Ring.

The loudest cheer at the protest was for former Shell worker Fergus Sweeney, who resigned in solidarity with the protesters.

“Up until last month, I worked as a security guard for Shell at both sites,” he said.

“When I heard Shell wanted to put five innocent men in jail, I wouldn’t work for them any more. I appeal to the other men from the area in the site to down tools tomorrow.”

03 July 2005 22:11

Up to 1,000 people from north Mayo have protested in Castlebar over the ongoing detention of five men who denied Shell employees access to their lands.

It is the latest in a series of protests over the imprisonment of the men who are objecting to the laying of the high-pressure pipeline across their land.

The rally was a credit to all involved -and mostly on a voluntary capacity - well done!! Pity the weather could not have been as well organised - still the heavy rainshowers did not put off the crowds. I went in tow with husband and 2 small kids- no mean feat and was delighted to see that many more families with kids were present to take this public stand against blatant injustice. The honesty and integrity of nearly all of the speakers brought a tear to my eye on more than one occasion. I would disagree with RTE report that indicated approx. 1,000 attended, to me it seemed like three thousand were present. At the end of the protest march thro' C'bar town the crowd was at its largest.
Standing next to us was a man who had travelled up to C'bar from Galway in support of the Rossport 5. He is a farmer and agreed with their stance.
There are a lot of people in for the long haul ourselves included.

I just want to say well done to all who attended the Rally in Castlebar. I could'nt attend on that day but am all set for the one in Belmullet. I think we are all shocked at the imprisonment of our five neighbours, its a disgrace , what is wrong with the judge, as I understand it they were imprisoned for stopping Shell from entering their lands, but if Dempsey hasnt given his consent then is'nt it Shell that should be prosecuted? for tresspassing? maybe I have misread the papers.please feel free to correct me. anyway good luck to Willie, Micheal,Vincent, Phillip and Brendan. agus slan go foill.

Well done Fergus. Actions speak louder than words.
You have sacrificed your job for principle and in support of the brave Rossport 5.
Your action is on a par with the actions of those who resigned from the Bush/Blair armies over the past two years or with Commdt Ed Horgan handing in his military medals at Dáil Éireann in protest at our own State's participation in the war against and occupation of Iraq.

Extract:

"The day’s biggest roar was reserved for Castlebar’s Mark Garavan, who said he had come to know the Rossport Five over the past five years. The crowd went wild for his passionate rhetoric. "I’m told that when a dinosaur died, its brain and spinal cord was so primitive, it took about half an hour to drop down. What Shell don’t realise is that their project in Mayo, as it stands, is over. I imagine like the brain of a dinosaur, it just hasn’t reached them yet. The fact of the matter is there will be no high-pressure pipeline in Rossport."
