With all 72 Lib Dem MPs supporting the mad Climate and Nature Bill, their clownish leader Ed Davey is effectively telling them to go back to their constituencies and prepare to live in mud and grass huts.

Rossport Five Rally - Castlebar

category mayo | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Sunday July 03, 2005 10:48author by Ed - shelltosea Report this post to the editors

Travellers Friend Hotel car park, 3.00 pm Sunday, 3rd July

An opportunity is provided for Mayo men and women to show practical support for the Rossport Five jailed on 29th June at Shell's behest - 5days ago!

This is a countywide rally in support of the Rossport Five who have now been in jail for five days without ever having their case heard.

The rally will commence no later than 3.00 pm at the Travellers Friend Hotel where family members and invited guests will address supporters and well-wishers.

Remember that justice delayed is justice denied. In this case court procedures have been used and abused to ensure that the Five are denied access to justice while at the same time Shell are given latitude to work on their lands. Repeated referrals and/or deferrals have resulted in no hearing of their case despite seven appearances in the High Court over a twelve week period.

Remember that an injunction is primarily granted by the High Court to stop changes being rushed through pending a full hearing. Normally it is intended to last for a few days only, or less commonly for a few weeks. In this instance it has been turned on its head as it allows Shell to rush through new work and will effectively last for six months at least.. There is something incredibly wrong in this - and moreover it is founded on a complex web of wrongs.

Come to the rally not just to support a good cause but to support your cause, your rights, your freedom and your constitution.

ODE TO JUSTICE

I

A field of gas discovered at sea
At the latter part of the 20th century
But still only in its infancy
A minister Ray Burke, in his wisdom NOT
Said to Shell “you could have the lot”
With great shouts of glee
They said “we’ll take it from the sea”
And clean it at a Bellinaboy refinery

II

Now work began and the sod was turned
Wagons rolled out laden with peat
Roads were narrow after years of neglect
No money spent but what the heck
They’ll be good enough to take the bog
Cos’we’ll treat the locals like a dog
But drains were deep and drivers anew
In to the sides went a few

III

Monies was spent and the roads seemed good
Something we haven’t seen much in this ’hood
Mayo Co. Council please take note
The people down here still have a vote
Locals spoke in notes of disdain
About the route of the proposed gas main
But Shell didn’t pay much heed
And forged ahead out of sheer greed

IV

An obstruction was meet in the shape of five men
When the pipes were about to go in
Court orders were issued and after proceedings
The laws of this land seemed to be receding
Five innocent men who stood up for their rights
Are now in cells as they say their goodnights
But their plight is now getting widespread
And thanks to the media it’s coming to a head.

V

Now my poetry skills aren’t very endearing
Shakespeare, Yeats or Kavanagh won’t be fearing
But justice has to be done
And free those men in Cloverhill
But let us ask Shell, if they wouldn’t abhor
A great big gas main outside their front door
In finishing I will say on a high
Hooray, Hooray for the Rossport Five.

I really wish I could be in Castlebar with you all today, and I'm sure that many people all over the country feel the same way. To those people, keep e-mailing/writing to your local representatives, lodge your complaint to Minister Dempsey, contact your local media and don't forget to write to the 5 men at Cloverhill Prison, Clondalkin, Dublin 22. This scandal cannot be allowed to continue! Solidarność!
