Stand off in Mayo

category mayo | environment | news report author Thursday June 09, 2005 21:49author by Pooka McFee - Nameless Faery Horde Report this post to the editors

As I write this local farmers and neighbours in Rossport, Co Mayo are blocking Shell

There are currently 2 Scania lorries carrying lengths of pipeline for Shell attempting to access farmers' land. They are being held by a van and about 13 local people. There is also one Gard present at the scene. The standoff has been going on since 6pm when local farmer Willie Corduff witnessed the lorries attempting to access (his)? land.
This is the time to act folks. If you were up in Mayo at the weekend you'll know why. we HAVE to support these people. If you can get up there consider going. Perhaps we need a permanent activist presence there. If you can't get there do something in your own area. look for Shell offices, govt. offices, Statoil are part of the consortium too. We need a huge noise now to let these invaders know that they can't get away with this kind of shit.

an antichrist or other dissident group - blow up the gas themselves with help from the psni - and subsequently simultaneously lock up their emenies with a combination of asbos and anti-terror legislation and the word of garda sups and drive shell out of the country so they can still privatise but sell dearer to someone else who will be a little more careful about trampling on and stirring up the small people

In correction to Pooka McFee, our long distance correspondant, one local resident was driving up a road, with no traffic mangement, at around 5.30pm today, and was obstrcuted by two large trucks carrying pipes to the Shell compound at Rossport. The resident was then told to reverse and make way for the trucks as the narrow roads cannot accomadate such traffic. He refused and was soon joined by 15 supporters. He rightfully declined to make way for the trucks, the obligation to ensure proper traffic flow lies the developer, in such cases they should make way for public traffic, not the other way around. This has been checked with the Gardai.
Police arrived, and focused their attentions on local residents, taking names and demanding that people turn their vehicles around and give the road to Shell. Ultimately, top mangement for one of the construction companies and a Garda superintendant arrived. Negiotiations trashed out a settlement which was that the U.K. reg. Scania trucks W978 PHH BHZ4642 drove as far as the compound, and turn around without delivering their load.
Intially the lorry drivers were agressively holding the road. The standoff finished at 9.40, begining at around 5.30.

Locals are saying that they don't want a rush of people up to physically support them until they ask for it. They are doing very well on their own for the moment and are maintaining a vigil now round the clock and have cars still blocking the road.
When they want bodies they will let us know.
In the meantime maybe we could prepare ourselves to start campaigning at Shell stations and elsewhere, make some fliers ourselves with the info we got at the weekend and start educating/challenging the public and the garage owners.

Who the fuck said anything about blowing things up or illegal activity ? do you seriously think if i knew the first thing about bombs and stuff like or that I intended raising a mujahideen force to go to mayo that Id be announcing it over the bloody internet ?

Believe it or not people with republican views can and do possess the ability to organise politically and advance their viewpoint in a peaceful non violent manner . What I intend doing is discussing with other people , not only republicans , the need for this issue to be highlighted and hopefully protested about in some manner .

(holy shit ,Als off on his holidays but the membership accusations havent gone with him thats for sure)

This is a national issue . The wealth of this nation is being stolen by a multinational outfit which bought it from a convicted criminal for a pittance . And knowing Ray Burke free state politicians and Shell we can assume there was an envelope or 2 passed at some stage .

As has been highlighted in Bolivia , Venezuela Iraq and a host of other places a peoples sovereignty extends to their national resources . This is a clear attack on Irish sovereignty by a multi national thief which was facilitated by a convicted thief and fraudster . Shell are taking what doesnt belong to them and charging our people through the nose for their own resources .

Not content with this they seem more than ready to ride roughshod over the few little people standing in their way .

Im sorry if me feeling theres something fundamentally wrong with this but Im heartily fucking sick to the back teeth of having the events of Omagh regurgitated at me nearly every time I express an opinion on basically anything . Did no one else ever get killed in this country ? youd think so sometimes .

32csm bombed no-one , nor did I . And the amount of people whove been murdered and blown to pieces to facilitate the likes of Shells theft of their resources is of greater significance to this issue than Omagh .

All Irish Irish people should get out and protest on this issue due to the simple fact theyre being robbed blind by a shower of theiving bastards. Compared to this the Northern Bank robbery was a fart in the wind .
Ill be doing my best to convince republicans to highlight and protest against this theft . Whats everybody else going to do ?

Was in Mayo last weekend. A great gathering. My heart sank when I got a text about the trucks moving in. Heart rose again and did laps of my skull with delight on hearing the local residents held their ground. Everyone should get this story out. It is insane and the time to act is now. Hasta la victoria...........M

Cork and Mayo are both a bit far to travel to for a lot of people. However driving in Louth the other day and needing petrol I had enough in the tank to choose not to use a Shell garage.
While most garage owners are probably not signed up to the export of massive revenues, which could and should be retained by the state, Shell do need a bloody nose in this instance.
If enough people refuse to shell out for Shell we may be at least be able to force this latter day East India Company to renogotiate the robbers charter signed up to by the gombeen men in Leinster House.
