Women & Globalisation

category dublin | anti-capitalism | event notice author Thursday March 03, 2005 09:29author by Sinéad Ní Bhroin - Sociaist Worker's Partyauthor email info at swp dot ieauthor phone 087 6490261 Report this post to the editors

Childcare, abortion, exploitation & the struggle for women's liberation in the 21st Century....

Over the last 30 years we have seen global capitalism open the doors of workplaces at all levels to women. There is a small layer of women, which have able to sidestep the worst oppression. But the exploitation and oppression of the majority of working people are nessecary for the survival of global capitalism. The Celtic Tiger's boom economy did not deliver on the needs of the mass of women and it has become clear capitalism never will.

The real hope for women's needs being put before global capitalism lies in the growing anti capitalist movement. The disproportionate extent to which rampant globalisation impacts on women's lives has been a theme of critics of neo-liberal development models for over a decade. What is exciting about this new way of putting women's liberation on the political agenda is the way the root cause of women's oppression and the real enemy is clearly identified as the same system that exploits the majority of workers. But clearly the involvement of women in the movements raises the possibility of bringing gender equality back to the centre of the struggle.

The Socialist Worker's Party are hosting an evening's discussion on women & globalisation introduced by Rita Fagan (community activist), Sinead Kennedy (SWP), Ailbhe Smith (lecturer in women's studies in UCD) & Joan Collins (Independent Cllr in DCC & key anti bin tax campaigner). There will also be a photo exhibition of women in struggle with some food, drinks & world music after the discussion.

All are welcome.

If you saw coverage of the opening of that shopping centre in Dundrum it looks like women are the biggest fans of globalisation. Women are by far bigger capitalists and it is their craze for shopping which is driving globalisation.

You're not victims, you're loving it.
