On Friday, the Los Angeles Times devoted its lead editorial to the proposition that Bono, the Irish frontman of rock band U2, "should be named the next president of the World Bank."
Outgoing Bilderberg Groupie and World Bank president James Wolfensohn's term ends in May and the United States, which has traditionally reserved the post for an American with experience on Wall Street or in government has said it wants to see a successor named before then.

They're the south leitrem terrorist association, of course. They bring together all of our favourite bogeymen in a heart-warming traditional rural setting. They include the Carrick on Shannon chapter of al Qaeda, the Drumshanbo Communist party, the Fenagh division of the anarchist internatoinal and the Mohill dissident Republicans. I'm amazed that anybody has to ask who they are!

These are the main confirmed / public events at this time > NB Please do not add unconfirmed or non-public information here:
The G8 Summit itself will run 6th-8th July 2005 at Gleneagles hotel in Perthshire, Scotland.
The Dissent! network has groups planning a large number of activities (too many to list here), both before, during and after the summit. Activities include positive 'fix stuff up' community projects in the local areas in the months before, lighting fire 'beacons of dissent' as the delegates arrive (like the Evian / geneva 'fires across the lake' project) and so on.
The Make Poverty History coalition are planning a high profile celebrity backed campaign with a demonstration / rally for Edinburgh on Saturday 2nd July (estimated to attract at least 100,000 people) as well as a counter conference type event.
G8 Alternatives have booked two venues in edinburgh for a counter conference on sunday 3rd july (capacity approx 2,500 and 1000).
People and Planet, the student network, will hold their Summer Festival in the local area from 2/3rd July (5 days of workshops, trainings, discussion etc)
A 'Really Really Big Blockade' type direct action by Trident Ploughshares (TP) is planned for Faslane nuclear submarine base on Monday 4th July. TP will set up a convergence space in Glasgow, and are happy for use to continue throughout the week.
The Peoples' Global Action Conference 2004 in Europe called for a global day of action on Wednesday 6th July 2005 - the opening day of the G8 Summit. This is a call for people to converge in Scotland to disrupt the conference, and for action to be taken simultaneously in villages, towns and cities world-wide.
Blockades against the Summit will take place on Wed 6th (the openning day).
G8 Alternatives will organise a mass demonstration the openning day of the Summit. Currently (as of Jan 05) they plan to assemble at 12pm midday at Gleneagles Train Station itself.
Friday 8th July (last day of the summit) will see actions themed around Climate Change.
G8 Alternatives are also planning for a campsite for 20,000 people, to also include a pop concert and space for counter conference. Negotiations with local authorities are ongoing.
The Dissent! network is also planning for a large campsite.
Various groups are looking for urban convergance spaces.
