How to Dismantle U2

category national | arts and media | news report author Tuesday February 01, 2005 16:07author by bono Report this post to the editors

U2 have announced their second concert in Ireland for this summer. They are doing this through their promoter, MCD. (MCD also promoted the elevation tour) It's interesting that they name their album "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb", and then use MCD, which is owned by Clear Channel. Clear Channel is closely aligned to the Bush administration, and support for the Iraq war exists throughout many of its radio stations in the United States. Actions ranging from bulldozing Dixie Chicks albums to censoring Rage Against the Machine songs have been taken by Clear Channel stations.

Clear Channel also owns AdShel - the people that put the ads at bus stops

"Take to your cars good people of Dublin and bring an end to this scandalous situation"

Ehhh, no, cars use more oil than buses. It's better that people stay on the bus and exert political pressure on Dublin Bus to get their advertising supplied by a local agency instead of a crappy US corporation.

You need to check reality a bit before you post.

What about going on foot or using a unicycle?
Does that use any oil?
Boycott Dublin Bus immediately.

author by Chekered Realitypublication date Tue Feb 01, 2005 18:53author address author phone Report this post to the editors

A unicycle requires a high level of natural balance and skill and training. It's not accessible to most people. Walking is definitely an option over short distances, but for most people traveling on the bus they're commuting many miles to work and they're going to be tired afterwards. So, once again, check reality before you post please. You're looking more and more unrealistic.

MCD is owned by Denis Desmond is it not..???

whatever the case, most every musician who speaks out for some liberal or progressive cause is full of shit as everyone knows that 4 out of the 5 major record labels are all owned by multinationals who have numerous fingers in the arms industry pie.

so bono, coldplay, radiohead, rage against the machine, etc, shove it up yr hole.

Not "every musician" there are many who entirely reject the entire "industry" and form their own DIY networks to work outside and in opposition to it.

Bono is just Bush's pop-puppet.

Probably motive is sincere but he just doesn't see why Bush is giving hime the time of day.

Dear oh Dear,
Old Bono, of U2 fame is not quite the progressive political chap we thought he was? Say it isn't so. Why I am shocked. Did not Bone-head ride with the Bush appointed fellah O'Niell to Africa? Of course it could be argued that Bono riding along with Mr O'Niell could have given the Bush Administration some desperatly needed credibility, but who am I to say, I'm a yank and I am stuck with the SOB as un-elected President (yup, he stole the election, with assistance of Ken Blackwell in Ohio).

But wait, there is more. Bono, or Bone-head (your choice) masquarading as a political progressive, did those cool songs in the 80's about US governmental complicity in propping up right wing governments ( and I heard those fighter planes, and the $100 bills fell, 100, 200) Not a word or even a song of that political dissent now. Mind you, now is when we need them the most, songs of open political dissent. Instead Bono is spotted singing at Superbowls, an orgy of "yeah yeah aint America great."

Better yet, there is his plainative cry's of harkining back to his "lower-middle-class" days of, what Crumlin or Blanchardstown? Give me a f***in' break.

My favorite though is auld Bono carping on about the situation in the north. While one can certainly speak out on some of the actions of the IRA, it is something else to continually state that the problem in the north is strictly the fault of the IRA, while never (not that I have heard anyway) on the actions of the British Military, the RUC, Orange Order or of their deathsquads UDA, UFF, RHC etc etc. Nope, not them, it is simply the evil auld, psychpathic IRA and if they did go, then we could all forget everything. Even his song "Bloody Sunday" was in essence filled with the sentiment of "would it not be great if there was no violence". No mention of the cause of much of the troubles in the north i.e. the British Influence and their use of a rotten, bigoted political and religious state to further their agenda. Kinda like the US government and, well pick your country or of the Bush Administration and their use of religious bigots here in the US to further their political agenda.

Yes indeed, he has come a long way from playing at McGonigles on South Anne St.

Give me Sinead O'Connor and her political agenda any day. She has earned the right to speak out truth.

But then, I'm a fookin yank, what do I know eh?

Thank you Mike for that interesting post. I personally cant stand Bono and the U2 capitalist venture. The depressing thing is, people will be going to U2 concerts in years to come, propping up a band that will no doubt emulate the longevity "The Rolling Stones" have mastered.

I saw Bono in town once, he's only 5foot something, and has an obvious complex about it, judging on his choice of foot wear. LMAO at him!!Anyway, I hate the way he portrays himself as a roving, groving ambassador for human rights. If you want to read about an even cooler Irish figure that pulled out all the stops, you could check out the life of Sean McBride. A far more interesting man than Bono could ever be.

The time Bono brought Trimble and Hume on stage, has to go down as one of the most embarrasing, premature stunts Bono has ever conjured. Is it me or did Bono really believe he was at the cynosure of an epoch moment in Irish history? I'm sorry, but I noticed Bonos ego perspiring in anticipation
of headlines etc Its the same ol' story when he is before the world media.

As a band, they've always been squeeky fucking clean, and find them strangely irrelevant , post-Joshua Tree. They lack a depravity (they'll always answer the telephone,if you like) that I feel is crucial in the idolatry of artists---

Whatever,
I hear you about Sean McBride. Isn't he the man behind the McBride Principles in relation to not supporting companies that are involved in bigoted practices in the north?

Good man and another one who has earned the right to speak with clarity on the north as well as other places on the globe. The man is heads and shoulders (oops, pun not intended) above Bone-head in moral and political clarity.

good point mike on the IRA stuff, you sumed up the the climate at the moment. everybody goes on about the brits being oppressive and all over iraq but with ireland the brits are our great neighbours pillars of the world, u can call these people trendies, i call them fuckin idiots. by the way the RA are recruiting kids as young as 8 in dublin ( front page of herald

Mike,

Well, I'm an admirer of Sean Macbride. I think there is someone out there working on a biography of the man. Its clearly a FF grudge against the man, that an official centenary celebration of his life has been ignored. I think members of U2 were at his funeral. LOL!!!I'm only now really discovering how influential Macbride was, I feel sort of ashamed that I knew fuck all about him.
